Cedega On Ubuntu

from what i can see its 5 dolla's a month or 55 dolla a year

i thought linux was free

i mean 55 dolla a year soon you will spend more than windows costs

What does Cedega's fee structure and licensing have to do with Linux? It's a proprietary derivative of Wine. Wine you can get for free. The OS is free too. But then you knew that, you were just muddying the water because it suits your perspective.
Should developers not be able to charge for contributive work while being able to benefit from the open source platform? Isn't that exactly what people opposed to open source, (or perhaps just specifically GNU/Linux), complain about? Matlab runs on Linux. Should that be free too? (Well there is Scilab, which is free, but that's for another thread I suppose.)

DirectX support is better in Cedega than in Wine, and a lot of the configuration is done beforehand. This is what subscribers pay for. It's $5 per month for a minimum of three months, it's not necessary to subscribe for a whole year.

The point is that you get to play games on the OS of your *choice*. It is about choice isn't it? Some people choose to be proactive about their digital rights instead of moaning and contributing to the mountain of ignorance around alternatives to Windows. Large gaming houses will not spend time on Linux binaries unless the market is there. That part is up to the users.

So, when does Linux create it's own "direct x"?

all i was saying is that if you consider how much it costs in the long run to play games on linux you might as well buy windows and dual boot because it costs around the same and cedega would end up costing more

55 dolla a year which is around 450 bucks a year

2 years = xp home

if you continue with that for the next 4 years it costs as much as buying vista premium

this is not my perspective, this is a fact

the whole point of linux is about it being cheaper than windows
when something is not cheaper than windows it does not make sense

also you have to mess with alot of settings to get some games to work from what i read

windows u load games and play games and you dont have a monthly fee to play the game

this is not my perspective this is a fact

the performance on cedega is also alot worse than windows

so your paying for something that is slower takes alot of fiddling and they charge you

yes that makes perfect sense

We're getting off the topic, seeing as I'm not a gamer and have never tried nor wanted to try cedega.

For me, linux is easier, more efficient and does what I want it to do, rather than shoehorning me into somebody else's idea of how I should work - and that is the point of linux for me.

So, when does Linux create it's own "direct x"?

The question should rather be "Will M$ release the specs for DirectX so that open source developers can do this?"

BTW, who is this Linux that you're talking about? You make it sound like a special UN organisation that is obligated to save PC users from a lack of choice. Point the finger back at yourself as the consumer.

Err, killa, sorry to rain on your parade, but...

Cedega costs money because they have to cover the cost of licensing DirectX from Microsoft... ;)

They have, it's called "OpenGL" :D

No, you were manipulating the facts, not merely stating them.
I have already pointed out that it is not necessary to spend that amount.
You are ignoring the facts.

The OS or the applications running on it?

I addressed that in my previous post. You are twisting the facts again.

the performance on cedega is also alot worse than windows

Do you have direct experience that allows you to make that sweeping statement? Yes, there is a performance penalty. There is no denying that. It's not enough to stop me from playing games with Cedega though (within the constraints of my current hardware limitations of course).

so your paying for something that is slower takes alot of fiddling and they charge you

Your conclusion is based on a heap of fallen cards.

The bottom line is that it is your choice, I couldn't care what OS you run. It's not my duty to convert you or anyone else, I grew out of that long ago.
I will continue to challenge people on misrepresentation of facts however, just not in this thread because it's clear that you're just going to waste my time by not reading my posts :).

Hmm, I see you guys trying to overflow the buffer :p.

@Kasyx, I see we're on the same subnet :p:D.
