I know someone with a Virgin branded one where you just stick in the sim card and it's a wifi router (with a LAN port). Awesome things... so useful.

I've use 4 different 3G routers that would do the job, Netgear MBR624GU, Huawei D100T, Dovado MBR, Airlive Air3G, and there are many others. None of them require a PC, although you may need a netbook or something just to set them up.
 
Jola from your experience, are they capable of running the modem at its native speed?

I'm trying to select the best option for me to stream my cellc 21mbps speed stick around the house and to my ps3. any comment on which you would recommend, i'm looking at price, latency, speed in my selection.

Here is My speed test from Umlazi Section V Local and international London International Germany

I played Gears of War 2 Local game on xbox live - no lag, game was lag free. Dunno what the latency was. Friend was in Eastern cape.
Battlefield: Bad Company 2 - Little to no lag (similar to my old 384 line before i moved) , ping on local server was 120.
 
Since this is a wireless nework, the latencies will START at 200ms. You also have to watch how much data you use. Gaming might chew your entire cap.

i can verify that the data usage on a lot of games is not that much. we're talking about 50 - 100mb for a couple of hours of playtime. i played fifa world cup 2010 and demon's souls online for a 4 hour period one morning this week and it used about 80mb for both.
 
trying to play starcraft 2 with a friend using this and it is unplayable :/ lags out almost every second so you get this freeze then fastforward then freeze type of gameplay throughout. Although I'm not sure how extensively he has tested it and what signal strength he has etc... he in Durban North or thereabouts.
 
it shouldn't lag like this if he has proper reception and is using the right usb modem. if i can play locals (i'm in durban, friend's in joburg) in fifa world cup on ps3 with zero lag then you should be able to play starcraft 2 without a hitch.

Is he getting HSPA+ or edge? What shows on mobile partner. I played alot of games online on the new network and its lag free.
 
He told me 97% signal strength and HSPA+ signal. I don't know how PC savvy he is and asked him about updates and viruses etc... but he never got back to me, he sorta just left lol, probably raged. When we were playing with him his name would frequently come up as "waiting for..." as you see it when one player is lagging.
 
Guys do you recommend cell c broadband "5GB" for me to play games on and download stuff ? And is this network stable in term of speed and do you lag a lot?

I use to play Starcraft II on MTN edge. No lagging except on 4v4 sometimes. But obviously delay so know uber kiting for me. I just avoided those 4v4s. I've since switched to CellC and it's 20 times better and I live in the sticks(Drummond) This network rocks. /me touches wood
