Cell C and Telkom to join forces?

Cell C recently migrated its core network to a world-class Huawei core switching network. The new core network is fully 3G ready and aligned with 3G standards. Cell C is currently the only network operator in South Africa with a combined 3G/2G network.

This is however only their core network, not the Radio Access Network. Cell C has also said that it may looking at moving directly to LTE (4G)...

With Telkom rolling out a 3G/HSDPA network - currently mainly for mobile broadband services - and Cell C sitting with a 2G network mainly for voice and SMS - the two companies may not be badly suited.

Ya, I suppose at a technical level there is some synergy, Telkom is also Huawei based, however unlike CellC they're deploying the 'full monty' HSPA (7.2dl/2.4ul).

Still don't see that CellC offer enough value (customer base is all wrong) for Telkom to take on their debt mountain, but hey that's just my opinion.

Also failing to understand why ppl here think CellC - Telkom merger will make things better for them? Quick pricing comparison ...

OOB mobile data rates:

Telkom 3G = R0.30 per meg
CellC (Virgin) = R 0.60 per meg

Wholesale termination rates:

Telkom 3G = R0.26 (peak), R0.14 (off peak)
CellC = R 1.25 (peak), R0.77 (off peak)

I do think it is not a bad pairing: Telkom is strong in the high end and corporate market while Cell C is strong in the low end & prepaid market. Telkom can effectively use Cell C to service the low end cellular market while it continues to focus on the higher ARPU clients – something which it is more experienced at.

Cell C’s established national cellular network, client base and brand must count for something: whether it is worth the dept is another issue.

Cell C is doing well in the Low end pre paid market, their new Woza Wenever is unbelievably good, R50 recharge with 100 anytime minutes.... thats crazy!!!!

So I would like Telkom to buy them, the poor people of our country need Cell C!
