Cell C boosting network performance and coverage

Not necessarily true as it would depend on the roaming agreement. It is possible that they only roam on 2g for voice in some areas....

Yes, and Cell C has begun to switch off roaming on Voda in areas where they have good coverage, one being the V&A Waterfront.
This hype about HSPA 900 is a bit much now, the real world dense urban results on lower frequency bands is not all its cracked out to be, especially in WCDMA
My money's on 900. The other networks will follow - one day.

I've been testing their coverage with a prepaid sim for a few months now and it's still not great. I would love to port over to them, but coverage is the single most important factor for me.

My dad wanted to get an iphone with them on contract and did the same thing. Unfortunately their signal in Constantia is awful. Not just for mobile internet speeds, I called him to test when he was in the house and the call dropped after 5 seconds. What a shame.

That is kind of my point, they would roam where they don't currently have coverage, thus their coverage either overlaps (using own towers) or matches (roaming) VC. Don't get me wrong, for data EDGE sucks, but technically it is data roaming which is essentially where Cell C are ahead of 8ta in that space for now (on well priced data packages).

On a side note a few people have mentioned the EDGE/3G switching component on phones possibly being a key culprit for slow speeds rather than networks. this would really be something for the manufacturers to look in to as it really is a pain and makes the networks look bad when it is often not their fault. Better EDGE signal should not mean your handset jumps over, it should be set to only use EDGE if NO 3G signal is available.

Ya, thats why every other network throughout the world is only using WCDMA 900 in rural areas.....
