Rather than tweeting I thought I'd post some updates from the launch in the forum.

Lars Reichelt, CEO of Cell C: "After the small launches like Cape Town, Durban... This is the big one."

It's also Cell C's 9th birthday today.

It's very difficult to provide Internet if there's a lack of backhaul in the country, said Lars Reichelt.

He's talking up FibreCo, saying that while there's enough (or going to be enough) fibre connecting South Africa to the rest of the world, there's not enough in South Africa.

South Africa is the 25th largest country in the world, said Reichelt.

Thanks for the updates Jan. Agreed that we need more national bandwidth, but Broadband Infraco launching tomorrow should help ;)

Reichelt says that their network i superior for the following reasons:

  1. Based on MSR (Multi standard radio), software defined radio (SDR)
  2. All-IP
  3. 21.6Mbps from day one
  4. Designed for very low latency
  5. HSPA+ All the way
  6. Release 7 Software

I hope he also says when will top-ups will be available at the same decent prices, or close to it anyway!

Reichelt explained that their refarming and use of the 900Mhz band gives them an edge as a single HSPA+ transmitter covers 3-5x more area than a 2100 UMTS site.

“We are now launching postpaid option. R299/month for 5GB and R149/month for 2GB.” from techcentral. Good to hear!

Sorry for not updating for awhile, was writing an article on the launch. It's been filed and should be live shortly with the announced data bundle pricing.

Lars Reichelt gifted the CEO of Nokia Siemens Networks worldwide with a knobkierie "to take care of his competitors." :-D

Thanks for the info on what's going on inside @ the launch gents. ;-)

Reichelt has been making a big deal about the MyBroadband award they've won: "First time we've ever been given an award for our network"

Keep impressing consumers with good speed and great pricing by staying on top of the demand on your network and they might just vote for you again, Mr Reichelt :-).

Asked Lars Reichelt about their 97% population coverage target and the "warnings" issued by MTN that Cell C will find it difficult to move from 50-odd percent pop coverage upwards...

He reiterated that their use of the 900MHz band allows them much higher coverage, up to 7 times more in rural areas.

Started refarming the 900MHz spectrum way earlier than their competition and have an advantage because they didn't have a lot of traffic on their 900 MHz spectrum because they got it late.

Reichelt added that the spreading of Fear Uncertainty and Doubt (FUD) is a technique developed by IBM and people seem to enjoy using it in South Africa.

"We do what we say and we say what we do," he concluded.
