Cell C grows subscriber base

ZAIN is Coming !

Zain is coming to bankrupt Cell-C soon.

We never had Low PEAK call rates from Cell-C from the day they commenced Business !

Virgin mobile using the Cell-C network Has Cheaper Data costs at 50c per megabyte.

Cell-C has never attempted to use SMS as a competitive strategy in a price War !

Even though the Cell-C network runs on 1800mhz EDGE Technology , the data speeds are terrible it even compares to MTN & VodaComs GPRS on 900mhz.

BuT

ZAIN !

is Coming !

50c a megabyte for EVERYONE !

20c SMS for all !

Lower on & off Network peak Call Rates !

50c a megabyte for EVERYONE !

Lower on & off Network peak Call Rates !

That's still hardly world-beating. Neotel charges 8c/MB out of bundle, and it averages out at not much more in bundle, SMSs are 10c on-net, and on-net local calls at peak times are 17c per minute billed per second - all on a 3G (CDMA) network. That's surely got to be the starting point. There's not much point in trying to draw comparisons of off-net pricing, since Zain would be in the same boat as all the other operators with the SA mobile operators' ludicrous off-net termination rates.

Yes, I suppose Neotel doesn't have much coverage yet, and they aren't offering mobile handsets, but it beats not having any network at all yet (like Zain, assuming they buy Telkom, and plan to roll out an expensive UMTS network at 2.1 GHz - they only need a few thousand sites to cover the main cities).

The reason virgins mobile data is only 50c is because they are Subsidising it, as to attract customers. Do you really think Zain will get a licence.

yeah! but after two years of virgin if mtn were to offer 60c a megabyte i would go. the only reason i am on virgin is because i always use internet. written with operamini.

Wow, seems like their "free" weekend call are pulling in the numbers...

I am glad they are doing better because we need all the healthy competition we can find.

"Our new core network has enabled us to effectively manage this increase in our customer base," continues Hedberg. "Had we not migrated to the new core network technology, we would have had to build a network three times its current size."

Well with my experiences of the Cell C network maybe they should have built it three times the current size. Hedberg - you get what you pay for. That's why I am paying more to Vodacom and MTN for better service and the use of their better networks.

whats the" new core network "

Cell C recently swapped out their old Siemens "legacy" core network with a new Huawei one. The new core is the most modern in the country and they are the only network in South Africa with a full Mobile Softswitch network. (Vodacom and MTN are currently planning their own implementations).
They also swapped out their packet core for a new Huawei packet core to cope with data demands (I believe this is a work in progress hence the intermittant service - but I think the data service will be much better once finished)
