Their phone prices are crazy. Rather buy a phone cash and go month to month.
Directly from Cell C we have for the S3
R454 x 24 on Straightup 100. Total cost = R10896 (30% more than N.M.)
R404 x 24 on Straightup 50. Total cost = R9696 (32% more than N.M.)
Pity, I don't like the 3rd party SP's
@znubair, does N.M. include I.B and CLI?

I just realized there is a way to downsize if I don’t want more of everything (minutes/sms/data)
For example:
Straightup 30 at R30:
30 mins.
30 sms
30 MB (way too little data for a smart phone)
If I wanted more I could get
Straightup 200 at R200:
200 mins (I'm not such a chatterbox)
200 sms (who sends 200 sms anyway?)
200 MB (hmm, for a smart phone, still not enough)
But let’s say my budget is only R200 per month?
Then take the Straightup 30 and “upsize” the data bundle to 500 MB.
So then, the upsized Straightup 30 looks like this:
30 minutes
30 sms
530 MB
Cost: R180 pm
This leaves still another R20 that I could use on OOB minutes at 99c per minute
So for R200 per month on Straightup 30 I can get:
50 anytime minutes
30 sms
530 MB of data

I'm really disappointed by these contracts when bolting on a phone.
The contracts are the best by far on the market in terms of value when not taking a phone. The moment though you add a phone, it becomes ridiculous. There needs to be some sliding scale to subsidize the phone the higher you go. This makes no sense, and Cell C had a golden opportunity / idea here to rake in a lot of new clients, but I'm afraid they shot themselves in the foot.
Maybe the Cell C rep, (or Mr Craig) can explain the logic behind these prices?
PS this might help FNB on the other hand to get more ppl to sign up for phones from them and take the contracts w/o phone option
Totally agree. Cell C has a golden opportunity to get new clients, but they are messing it up with the price of the handset on these contracts.
They had at a stage under all deals the S3 at R499 on straight up 100, which meant you paid R9,576 for the phone over 24months :wtf:
They have removed this now, the only place you now find S3 is under the build your own contract straight up 800 R1,154 over 24, price of phone R8,496.
If they could only give the phone at the Vodacom online prepaid price of R6,999 (https://shop.vodacom.co.za/shop/mob...004&voucherCode=&menuKey=&selectionKey=mobile) would that have not been awesome R391.63 on straight up 100 over 24months. We can only wish I suppose

To be fair, I enquired from Autopage what they have for the S3:
Straightup 200 at R449 x 24.
So their phone price is R249 x 24 = R5976.
And that while Cell C’s contract builder gives R554 x 24 on Straightup 200.
Phone price R354 x 24 = R8496.
So Autopage is R2500 cheaper!
Note they didn't say which version of the S3.

I still reckon that if you more interested in the data, get the 99c prepaid deal and take the 3Gb for 365 days at R399 smart data bundle. Your call rate is still 99c.
problem is that you can only put this on the top-up correct?

This is the type of deal I'm looking for which Vodacom doesn't offer, so guess I'll be porting to Cell C in the next couple of months.
You guys have all been spoilt by Vodacon and Mtn's hidden pricing structures over the years, thinking you're getting fancy new phones for reasonable prices, while actually paying crazy prices just to make phone calls or use data.
I reckon, either buy the phone you want outright, or buy a cheaper phone if you can't afford it. You do not need to have the latest / coolest phone. (well you do, but if you can't afford it, tough.)
You have to realise that there's no way Cell C's gonna be able to compete the the big 2's handset pricing. They don't have the buying power since they deal in much lower volumes. So their pricing will never match.
You have to prioritise - do you want a nice phone, or do you want to be able to USE your phone. In SA at the moment, it's one or the other, not both. Awesome phone but expensive data and talk charges, or cheaper phone but really good data and talk charges. Those are the only choices available to the SA consumer as far as I can see. For now, anyway.
(Unless you're making enough bucks to buy your awesome phone outright, then you can have your cake and eat it. But then I assume you're not on here complaining about Cell C's handset prices)
For example, personally I'm using a 2 year old Xperia mini. It's not great, but it allows me to use the apps I need, surf the web (thanks Opera), check mail etc. Also, it's still in great condition. When it eventually dies, I'll probably buy a Samsung Galaxy Pocket, or maybe that entry-level Motorola. Not my ideal choices, but I refuse to be tied into a 24 month contract with the likes of Vodacon just to get a nicer phone. Unless there's a really good deal / promo that'll allow me to actually pay less than cost (and even then I'd probably still put in a Cell C sim)

I mean, I know why I migrated off Vodacom - didn't want to be tied into the same pricing structure for 2 years at a time when prices were changing every month, and mostly downwards. Didn't want to be paying their ripoff prices when people like Virgin and Cell C were substantially cheaper.
Then to compound the issue (although this only happened after I cancelled), ICASA allowed Cell C (and 8ta) to pay lower Interconnect rates, as an incentive to add competition to the industry. (and rightly so). However that means Voda and MTN will never really be able to compete on voice costs, at least.
So getting away from them was a no-brainer in terms of non-emotional reasons. (I won't get into the fact that those bastards used their duopoly to keep mobile prices high for over a decade, and therefore will never get anymore of my money, even if they do become the cheapest, which they've shown no sign of ever doing).
So what are your reasons for going back to them? Am I missing something or are you just an idiot? I mean, you haven't exactly substantiated your statement above.
Oh, and as for Cell C filing for bankruptcy, have you been to a mall lately? I've had to put off trying to sign up for Cell C cos their stores are always too full.

cellc built a new tower about a 100m from my home and i'm having endless problems with my 3G and calls since then. add to that their new pricing structures and i'll rather pay more and have no problems with reception etc.

Prices are ridiculous I agree. Awesome feature and I would move in a sec if I could get a decent phone on the straight 100 for no more than R220

Suddenly I am not impressed anymore.
If I recreate my RBM200 contract, it comes to R474/month over 24 months, while I am currently paying R249/month. And I am still getting 50mb data more on the RBM200.
Not good.
EDIT: And to think that the device is almost 2 years old already! I would have guessed it would be a lot cheaper. But I think AKC is trying to eyeblind us with his 99c...
