Cell C launches Wi-Fi Calling

They've given up on fixing their network :D

Actually well done, this is the way things get done internationally. IM starts taking off? Bundle a metric crapload of free SMSs so the user doesn't even need third party software. VoIP starts taking off? Bundle a metric crapload of free talktime so the user doesn't even need third party software. Etc. Embrace the changes of time.

Well done to them for doing this.

Now we just need to wait for MTN to wake up.

I don't get it. What's with the limited device support? How does it work then?

It seems to be a feature of the device that they are using. So if you have a compatible device, you will automatically make calls though wifi if you have a good connection.

This is going to be a hit with university students and their campus wifi.

So surely that would be OS dependant, not hardware dependant? (to a point, obviously)

How will one check if they're phone is supported?

Currently using a Samsung Galaxy S4 i9500.

Customers do not have to download an application – they enable the service via their phone settings on a supported Wi-Fi-enabled handset.

Seems like a hardware feature.

Depends how they implemented it.

Some operators (like T-Mobile) used to only support Wifi calling on their branded phones as they have hooks in the OS that they use (mostly Android type phones). With IOS you will need a carrier update to enable it (or you can update the IPCC file yourself)
