Cell C says won't charge porting fee

interesting. still the question, my contract expires end of next year with Nashua Mobile, can I port yet, or do I have to wait for a contract to end.

MrG I think you can still port, but would have to probably 'buy' your way out of your existing contract first, whatever clause they have for premature termination.

Mine has already expired with Vodacom, been waiting for Paris and his chommies to get their arses in gear.

when mnp come affect you can port, you just have to pay the remainder of your contract and even penalties.

mmm celc ,that sounds like a good move on their part....

Kudos - hope Virgin will follow suit.

Can't really make a judgement without first knowing what the costs involved are?

Mr.G it doesnt make much sense to port while your still in your contract.. youll need to pay a hefty amount to get out of it....Rather wait till your contract is finished and then port if you want

It might make sense - you would have to pay that hefty amount anyway so it all depends on if you're going to save money by switching and if so how much.

I know my sister wanted to end her contract a year early and they wanted to charge her for the remainder of the contract + R2700 termination fee. Disgusting...

On topic: Any operator that charges a client to port to them is a bit doff if you ask me. Unless MTN and Voda get together as usual to agree on a porting price

Don't see how that is possible.. for a year early youll be paying atleast R1000 and you wont get any of the minutes or other benefits... You will immedietely be a grand short. I doubt any operator will give such good offers that people will be prepared to pay out their contract and leave......

One example just to show it's possible -

Say someone is on Vodacom Weekender with a monthly fee of r135 and they make 50 minutes of peak calls per month to a telkom line at the rate of R2.75 per minute. Each month their bill - excluding all the other clutter - will be r272.00.

That same bill would cost r100 on a V100 plan netting you a savings of r37 even after you've paid vocacom their r135.

Never said probable - but it is possible. :)

Don't see much discussion on the risk of getting lost in a black hole between networks. I'm thinking about porting, particularly now there's no cost involved but I'll wait a week or two until we see whether it's going to be a painless process.

I'm also surprised that the networks don't seem to be offering sweeteners to existing customers to make it worth their while NOT to port. We live in interesting times!

I am the same. What is the process one must follow?
Must you give 1 month notice to your current provider and then approach your future provider to show intent to port, or just start with the future provider and they do everything, liasing with the current provider, etc??
Are there any definite processes in place?

Porting is free, but as I said above, my advice is not to rush to do it, particularly if you use your cellphone for business communication. Apart from risk of going into a black hole, I think that the older networks will wake up and offer contracts which reduce the attraction of porting. None of them want to lose customers at the end of the day. What I'd like to see is an contract that is more attractive the longer you stay with a particular network. They can afford to do something like this. They could also offer cheaper contracts if they didn't have to build in the cost of a new cellphone every two years. They have pretty creative marketers, so I plan to sit back and see what happens over the next month or so.

Regarding how to port, the noise is already starting on TV. Cell C have a brilliant ad - very funny! The press advertising is also grinding into gear. I guess The Sunday Times will be full of full-page ads on Sunday. Personally, I think they should apply this money to cheaper contracts.

Incidentally, Arthur Goldstuck is about to publish a book which deals with the ins and outs of buying a cellphone in SA. He plans to expose as many marketing traps as possible. Probably worth waiting for.

Also like the ad with the little people!

Can charge you a penalty now with MNP almost here? I understand having to pay off the remainder of the contract but not the penalty.

Contracts

The termination will be written into the contract that you sign. With cellphones, more than almost any consumer product, it really does pay to read the fine print. It's what the service providers use to maks sure that their profits stay as long as the cellphone numbers we all use.:(
