Cell C to offer free WhatsApp services

Yeah this free service is going to mean nothing when cell C's coverage is still so patchy and unreliable. I have cell C card in my phone but for data and incoming calls I rely on MTN. Cell C I use to make outgoing calls when the signal is strong enough.

My first thought when I read "Cell C to offer..."

How about focusing on offering good signal....while shafting the decorations for another day?

WhatsApp had this partnership structure in place already, various European operators are partnered with WhatsApp, and it is basically establishing WhatsApp as a virtual operator on a cellular network. This also when WhatsApp is working towards voice and possible video services. Under my understanding there is a revenue sharing model somewhere here in the agreement.

Get a phone with 900MHz UMTS (Quad band preferred to make sure you always have signal).
People are complaining because their phones do not support the frequencies.
Signal is mostly excellent.
Data coverage is weak at some towers (in rural areas). I get 8Mbps down and 2Mbps up in Centurion area Pretoria.
 
Good strategy of gaining some scale ahead of VoIP that Whatsapps is planning to introduce. My guess is VoIP will not come free on the network.
