Cell C weighs up its options

He argues that SMS will for long remain the killer data application for mobile operators in emerging markets and that was reflective in the data requirements of the LSM 3-9 market
True... but I wouldn't go for a service provider that can't offer me 3G when I do actually use it from time to time.

When a provider creates a service that makes use of 3G properly, at acceptable rates and is as easy to use as sms and widely adopted on phones, then sms will die.

Its only so popular because its "easy" to use pretty much, and its "cheap"

I have used CellC's network in my area. It does suck. MTN is much better where I stay. Perception my backside. I have experienced their bad network for myself. It might be better in other areas but that doesn't help me because I have to use it where I travel.

I can add to the Cell C reception story, my boss is on Cell C.
Many times I've sms'd him and he never gets the SMS's or he gets them later.
One day, I was going to be late, so I sms'd him.
I got to work, he was like, why you late?
and as I was about to speak, my sms arrived, 20 min later!
And times I've tried to call friends who are on Cell C, no reception and I have to listen to that stupid woman.

In my area we have good cellC reception, and can do the woza weekender as well.

Sometimes when the pressure is on the woza weekender, we can't connect.

Haven't had any issues with SMS'es so far.

I will use CellC for as long as possible.

I'm waiting for my current CellC contract to expire then im porting over to Vodacom. Sorry CellC, but I want 3G :(

< quote article > Obeid was ultra defensive: "Our biggest problem in the past is that we wanted to be everything that our competitors were. That they have deployed 3G networks should not compel us to do the same." < end quote >

With such blatant disregard for consumer needs and industry trends, I most certainly will not renew my contract with them. Plus one vote for MTN.

Their lack of 3G is the reason I will not even consider using their network.

Missing the point

I think you are all missing the point?

Any company in any industry must have a focused strategy and a target market (Marketing 101). Lydon, I'm sure you work for a company that sells everything to everyone? apogeeza, you too?

It's not blatant disregard for consumers, but rather disregard for YOUR particular needs and regard for OTHERS! If you need 3G, then I agree, go the other routes. If you need a "pick-up" don't buy a "sedan" and say it's a bad "pick-up". As a consumer you have the right to choose the targeted offering that best suites your needs and from the company of your choice?

Have you ever considered the consumers that do require basic service at a fair price? Do we ponder the fact that their are millions of people out there who do not want 3G? Think about the social disparities in this country and you quickly understand that the people on this forum are the minority. Doesn't make us wrong, just makes us a different target market.

Wyzak, ToxicBunny, seem to have this concept understood. Well done guys!

" ... consumer needs and industry trends ... "

Consumer needs are changing ...
yes consumers are still heavily with sms, but their needs are evolving with newer phones and with newer tech, and this change requires 3G, HSPA*, etc. at continually greater capacity. Another eg: many people in SA have paid 4-times the price of N95-8Gb which is officially supported, and risked a lot just to have an unofficial and unsupported iPhone. One guy I know only ever connects it to the net via a wireless network, he requires mobile capacity and does not have it.
* Up and Down packet variants

Industry trends are ever changing ...
7.2Mbps HSDPA just out with 15.2 (??) on its way to SA while 20-something is out in Europe.

If Cell-C still wants to stick with SMS with THAT blatant disregard, then they can do so without taking me down with their sinking ship.

Does that excuse their sorry ass of a network? I have to always phone my Cell C friend a second time (just after i put down the first one) because always the first call is saying he is not available.
