Hi all

So my grandad has tasked me with the mission of buying him a cell phone.

Requirements are: touch screen and must have a loud ringer (he's hard of hearing so has to hear the phone ring if it's in the other room)

He's not fussed about it being fancy. Only needs to make calls and send sms'.

I'm thinking of a basic Samsung Galaxy or Huawei.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Fair point, but an iPhone is way overpowered for him and I don't see him spending that amount of money on a phone just to call and SMS.

Plus he lives in Zim, do they even have an iStore there? :D

In a similar position looking for my anti tech Dad. I'm waiting on the Nokia 3310 reboot that's coming at the end of the month before I buy anything. Very long battery life, will only make occasional calls, hardly ever texts or emails and a physical keypad.

How about the Vodaphone Kicka? I think that's the cheapest 'quality' touchscreen you can get.

My mother (in her 60s) prefers old-style phones with buttons, so your dad already sounds ahead of the curve with his desire for a touchscreen.

Most phones you can hack the volumes, but you can also damage the speakers.

Try get something with a larger screen and run a custom launcher/theme like "Simple Senior Phone" or "Big Launcher"

This. Also install one of the myriad T9 keyboards in the play store.

Perfect phone for old people: iPhone

*runs*

Years ago we got my Grandmother a 3 year old iPhone 4. She absolutely adored it and made us get her an iPad Mini. Fully immersed in the environment.

That being said, try finding a iPhone 5C or 5S. Should be fairly affordable and they last for years.

If you are looking for something cheap with decent specs I would consider purchasing something from Aliexpress. The A101 has roughly the same performance as the Samsung Galaxy J5 with an IPS LCD instead of an Amoled display.

I also recently received a Nomu S20 from China which would also be an excellent choice for an elderly person as it has the latest NXP Smart PA sound system which produces the loudest sound I have ever heard on a smartphone which might be worth considering if the person is hard of hearing. The S10 which is the cheapest model is currently selling for ~$120 on Gearbest. This phone has a huge 5000mAh battery, is waterproof and can withstand being dropped from height onto concrete. It weighs around 220g but should last for several days between charges. It could also be used as a portable boombox/car music player etc. in addition to just being a smartphone.
