Cell saving

Contracts must be transparent and easy to understand, including the billing for free and charged airtime.

Virgin seems to be the leader when it comes to transparency in contracts but I don't think consumers like it too much. I mean we all know the phone's not really free but they (the mobile networks) imply it is, and everyone likes a free deal don't they:p

This is gonna be most interesting on Vodacoms Iphone deals.

To see how much the handset is subsidized, etc

i've never understood this fee paid for upgrading, im glad its cancelled.

Such subscribers may not be charged exorbitant “cancellation” fees

What is defined as exorbitant? When I upgraded a few months ago MTN said that if I do decide to cancel the the contract before the 24 months is done, I have to pay all costs out standing plus R1700 cancellation fee.

That would equate to the follow:

R289 subsctiption x 24 = R6 936
Penalty fee = R1 700

I would classify that as exorbitant...

oh plus you would have to pay something for your handset as well.

Can we not take them to the cometition commission for anti competitive behaviour for charging those cancellation fees? Because of that big fee it would most certainly prevent people from hopping over to another provider. Say your subscription is R289pm and got 6 months left, it would tally up to R1734, which would make it more realistic to hop over, but then they add another R1700 to make you decide to stay for the last couple of months. That is anti-competitive in my mind...

the way it's going to work is like this.
you'll get a handset that's R5000 , every month they will deduct a prorata amount.
So if you cancel in month 22 you will prob pay about R400. This is good news for the consumer but the bad news is that none of the networks are ready yet and are applying for extensions...so we'll prob see this early next year.
Anyway good news all in all.

17 August seems awefully arbitrary to me.... my bet is that this will only be implemented in 2009 if we are lucky. But I guess its worth waiting for... provided that the providers dont take the liberty (which they of course will) of extending the contract indefinitely.

Well, lets hope it works out like you say.

At the moment it's like this:
On a contract (Procall 120/220 for example, same on VodaCom, etc.) you are issued a "free" handset (subsidised by your subscription every month).
What they don't tell you is that this subsidy is for the most expensive phone you can take at that particular time, which was an E61 in my case.
So, lets say you want to opt out after 15 months & you took a "free" 6111, for example, you have to pay the handset-"clawback" fee equivalent to a E61!

seems to be a great day for SA telecommunications..
- ICASA steps in with regulations governing cellphone contracts
- Neotel number portability goes live

anything else? :)

I think we must all sue them if the grant extensions.
The government gazette was issued a long time ago.
