I'm considering porting from Virgin to either Cell C or 8ta on prepaid. I'm happy with Virgin, so this is just for better data prices.

I just wanted to find out if anyone has experienced 3G or HSDPA in Durban? The reps at the store say there is coverage all over Durban but I just wanted to make 100% that it will actually be fast enough to make Skype calls and stuff.

Thanks.

Hi Roguemat,

Virgin mobile is currently using cellc's network, you can also refer to http://www.cellc.co.za/network-coverage-map to check coverage in your area.

I was going to mention that. On my phone where I setup data the access point that works is CellC. So does this mean that I will get that same speed once I port? Because Virgin is surprisingly fast.

EDIT: Getting 13Mb/s on Virgin.

Cell C is more stable network than 8ta. I don't talk about peak downloads, but more consistent response time. Here is example of 8ta ping times (two attempts in period of few seconds). It is not suitable for Skype voice (no video).
Code:
C:\ping mybroadband.co.za

Pinging mybroadband.co.za [41.203.21.137] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 41.203.21.137: bytes=32 time=60ms TTL=54
Reply from 41.203.21.137: bytes=32 time=35ms TTL=54
Reply from 41.203.21.137: bytes=32 time=34ms TTL=54
Reply from 41.203.21.137: bytes=32 time=33ms TTL=54

Ping statistics for 41.203.21.137:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 33ms, Maximum = 60ms, Average = 40ms

C:\>ping mybroadband.co.za

Pinging mybroadband.co.za [41.203.21.137] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 41.203.21.137: bytes=32 time=1000ms TTL=54
Reply from 41.203.21.137: bytes=32 time=246ms TTL=54
Reply from 41.203.21.137: bytes=32 time=238ms TTL=54
Reply from 41.203.21.137: bytes=32 time=206ms TTL=54

Ping statistics for 41.203.21.137:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:

Just an update, I am porting today.

This weekend I drove from Durban to near Richards Bay. I had HSDPA the whole way. At our destination I was getting around 3Mb/s, and the guys on MTN and VC had little to no signal, and got Edge at best.

Just to butt in, Any idea if the Berea/ Glenwood area in Durban is congested? And will it be one of the LTE supported areas?
