Ok, could someone please tell me if it's possible to port from a prepaid mtn number to a prepaid cellc number. The cellc site seems to indicate it is:

"You can port to us without losing your old number. Just follow these easy steps:

Buy any Cell C starter pack and do NOT open it
RICA your SIM card
SMS #portme#serialnumber# (note: this is the serial number of your new Cell C SIM) to 084 767 8287 from your MTN, Vodacom or Virgin Mobile SIM card
You will receive two confirmation SMS’s within two hours on your MTN, Vodacom or Virgin Mobile SIM
Wait 24 hours until your MTN, Vodacom or Virgin Mobile SIM card stops working
Then you can insert your new Cell C SIM card and recharge to start making calls"

I went into a cellc store and asked for a sim card so I could port. The store got me what I wanted and entered my details into the system and fired off the portme sms. I then asked for the 3Gb for a year virtual voucher so that I could load the data bundle when my number had ported which I also got.

This morning I got a voicemail saying I can't port my number onto a prepaid databundle (this is around 48 hours later, never mind the 24). So is the virtual voucher for the data bundle the problem and do I seriously need to visit the store at a later date, once ported, to buy the voucher? Or is the prepaid porting an issue? Maybe it's the starter pack, do I need to buy something more than the sim?

If someone could please explain what the actual issue is that would be great, I really dread having to go back to yet another cellc store where no one knows what is and isn't possible.

I've successfully ported my Vodacom Prepaid number to Cell C Prepaid. (Best decision i've made, Cell C signal is so much better in my suburb than Vodacom)

You can read all about it here.

I did buy a data bundle once, converting the airtime to data, but I haven't tried this new 3GB per year bundle, so I can't comment on that.

I've just got an sms saying thanks for giving my details for rica, you have successfully registered with Cellc - this truly is strange.

Hope I'm not hijacking your thread, but it is also Cell C porting related.

I ported yesterday to Cell C from Vodacom. I went into the shop and a Cell C rep did it for me. I got the following sms from Cell C,

1. Thank you for your request to port to us...
2. Thank you for giving us your details for Rica...
3. Welcome to Cell C family. Your number is ________ (which is my vodacom number) Please recharge to activate your account. Cell C

On Cell C's website it states the following,

"Wait 24 hours until your MTN, Vodacom or Virgin Mobile SIM card stops working.
Then you can insert your new Cell C SIM card and recharge to start making calls"

But the sms I got said the following,

"Welcome to Cell C family. Your number is ________ (which is my vodacom number) Please recharge to activate your account. Cell C"

So which is it, do I wait for my vodacom sim to stop working or do I put in my Cell C sim and recharge to activate my account?

I waited until Vodacom stopped working. (6 hours later).

Then I removed the Vodacom Sim card from my phone and popped the Cell C sim into the phone and recharged with a voucher. (Via internet banking)

Try phoning your number from another phone and see what message you get. Oh yes, remember you lose whatever Vodacom airtime you had.

So either send the airtime to another Vodacom sim or use it before you lose it...

The only problem is, when must I send the airtime over to another number. It's been 24 hours and my Vodacom sim is still working. What if it takes days for the porting to complete, then I don't have airtime if I transfered it. (Thanks for the tip).

Edit: I must mention that while I was in the Cell C store yesterday the consultant told me to put my Cell C sim into my phone, because he said sometimes the porting goes through immediately. It didn't work so I took out the sim and put my Vodacom sim in again. (I hope this did not mess up the porting process)

Edit: I've also purchased the 3 Gig data bundle for a year. As soon as my number porting is done, I will try and use the voucher.

Edit: I have a Vodacom prepaid account (Well almost a Cell C prepaid account)

I don't know why the salesperson told you to put the sim in your phone... the starter package clearly says DO NOT OPEN.

Buy any Cell C starter pack and do NOT open it

RICA your SIM card

SMS #portme#serialnumber#

I've got a feeling he messed up the whole process for you.

My mtn number is still active so I'm guessing tomorrow is visit cellc again day. :-(

Woke up this morning to a "serivce unavailable" took the leap of faith and put the cellc sim card in and everything seems to be working. So after close on 4 days I am finally ported :-)

So it does eventually work. I'm approaching 48 hrs and I'm waiting for the porting to finish. I hope it's not 4 days or even longer.

Have you tried phoning your number from a different phone, just to make sure that you can receive calls on your number/phone?

You should hear 2 beeps in the beginning if you phone from MTN or Vodacom, this is to let the person know that you are phoning a different network. (Cell C)

You also get "Woza Wheneva minutes" everytime you recharge with Cell C, which allows you to phone another Cell C number for free.

Lasts from Monday to Sunday only.

What is WOZA WHENEVA?

All you have to do is purchase an Easychat, Gospellife, WINC, or Nike Football starter pack and recharge with a minimum of R10 a week to start earning your free minutes:

If you recharge with R10 you'll get R10 airtime and 10 extra FREE minutes talktime!

If you recharge with R100 you'll get R100 airtime and 100 extra FREE minutes talktime!

It's been 72 hours and I'm still not ported. Cell C (~AM~) said he would look into it, but it's been 2 days since I last heard from him. Starting to regret doing this move to Cell C if this is the type of support a person gets.

Edit: Got a message that said the port should happen in the early hours of tomorrow morning.

Edit: And I'm finally ported, only took about 84 hours.

To port a contract number is even easier. (Contract to Contract) - Call 147 from your new Cell C contract sim. request to be transfered to the number portability department. They will request the account number from the other network, and then call you on the number you wish to port. Once confirmed you will notice a change in number after about 24 hours. Second time, except for the lack of coverage in some areas RE: 3G and HSDPA, the more of us that port, the better the connection will get. My cell bill has dropped almost by half for the same equivalent with Vodacom.
