does it apply with current contract users? or only new promotions?

If you read the article you will see it isn't actually about the drop in interconnect rates, but actually about the holiday specials these cell companies are offering.

As to whether or not the holiday special prices apply to contract holders I suppose it depends on the company. As examples:

Vodacom this weekend said it will cut Vodacom-to-Vodacom peak call rates by 15% during the month of December. But, the promotion excludes Per Second Plus and any inclusive voice bundle minutes.

This is R1.50 per minute, available across all of Cell C's package deals (including Hola 7, Winc and Gospel Life).

There is simply no way these companies are going change their billing models at short notice. The impact on shareholder value/profit forecasts will be too drastic. I haven't seen the share price of say, MTN, dropping. This is indicative that change is not "imminent" and these fancy deals are just piggy backing on the euphoria about the apparent dropping of inter-connect rates.

The con and rip-off continues!

Ha ha.Cell phone companies dropping prices? no way. IMHO they will rather change their rates in such a way, it will cost you more, but on the advert is will sound cheap!

Well the question here was: Will the lower rates last, and for how long?
Now if food prices, and virtually everything in our lil world seems (or is) to be driven by oil price changes, what drives the changing prices of IT? I don't get why, once they lower the price, it doesn't stay like that permanently, or till the next lowering.

yay, so the cellphone companies are playing ball, but what about telkom and neotel.

While we at it, who was the first to announce major price drops?

Dougee boy of course, you know Doug!!! From Vox!!! He announced a price drop to R1,05c:

Vox Telecom Group MD Doug Reed said that their Vox Telepreneur clients will receive a peak mobile call price cut from R 1.49 per minute to around R 1.05 per minute from 1 December – sooner than the 1 February and 1 March implementation dates of the lower rates. Reed said that Vox Telecom will ‘take the knock’ to benefit their customers.

Then a few short moments later, all Vox Dealers and Subscribers received the following email:

Dear Vox Telepreneur dealers and customers

As you are well aware, the Mobile Termination Rate will come into effect in February/March 2010.

In line with the Vox Telepreneur policy of passing any pricing advantages through to our customers, we will be dropping our peak cellular call rates from the 26th of December 2009.
Our new rates will be R1.09 per/min - which means you will be paying 80cents per/min less than the incumbent rates!
This equates to a massive 42% saving on all cellular calls.

This effectively means that Vox Telepreneur will be subsidising your calls until such time as the new MTRs become effective.

Vox Telepreneur will also continue to pay every customer a rebate of 40 cents per minute for every inbound minute received from a cellular call and 20 cents per minute from Telkom.

As Vox to Vox calls are FREE - this is still the smartest choice of all!

Thank you for your continued support.
Regards,
The Vox Telepreneur Team

I checked my itemised billing this morning, which is updated daily, and I am still paying R1,49 per minute. Not R1,05c as promised by Doug through the MyBroadband.co.za news post.

I have also been in contact with Doug's office, but he was unavailable, as usual, for comment, and I spoke with a lovely lady named Tammy, who seemed to know nothing of the promised price cut. ???? that is concerning Doug ????

On reading the news here on MyBroadband on the 16th of November, I contacted my entire Downline to share the news with them. Now I am going to look like a liar... what gives Doug???

Suddenly I am a rather nervous Vox Customer/Dealer

Nevermind the fact that my Dealership was accidentally cancelled this week due to an internal mistake by accounts. We can accept human error, but when you publish "promises" you need to stick to them... else it's false advertising!!!

I don't care what they charge anymore... cellphones are so yesterday lol.
I use mine only when I absolutely have to.

The article tries very hard to discredit everything- maybe to stimulate discussion. The Virgin Mobile and Cell C prices are not festive specials, they are real cuts. As usual, Vodacom and MTN have come up with tricks.

I have to agree there +1!!

Okay... I just got a call from Brad at Doug's office... and he has explained everything to me...

Regrettably the anouncement to MyBroadband.co.za was not an intention but rather an aim, however, it was not communicated that clearly. Once the powers that be had discussed everything and crunched the numbers, it was decided to set the price to R1,09c and from the 26th. An email was sent immeadiately to all customers and dealers.

Apologies have been conveyed to all. The fact remains, that Vox where still the FIRST to offer price cuts. They are still a business, and they still work out to on of the most cost effective fix line solutions. (Wish they would start doing mobile phones as well).

On another angle, Vox is also the only company that offers PBX solutions on month to month contracts... no 12, 24 or 36 month commitment required by the client. So the whole thing works on the policy of: Do business with us, cos we are good, not cos you signed paper... (Virgin Mobile could learn from this).

Well, I am now happy, and if anyone else out there had any similar concerns, then hopefully now they can rest easy...

Remember, we all have the potential for error...

In closing: If you believe you can get a better price somewhere else, then PLEASE go and get your better price somewhere else. I joined Virgin Mobile for the better price, and have regretted the decision ever since... even after the whole ICASA dealing to resolve the issue, I am still a very UNHAPPY customer with Virgin, but I cried when telkom said that they may have to cancel my ADSL, as that would mean losing my Vox phone...

My Vox bill last month was over R800, and it was worth EVERY SINGLE CENT!!!

I cant believe these greedy operaters are going to try and take credit for something they:
a) do every year
b) are being forced to do.

Your call rates are ridiculous you greedy bastards.
No thanks given here.

I have been doing sums all day on MTN's new contract packages, comparing them to the old packages, and my conclusion is that MTN's package rates have gone up by at least 50%, mainly because they are not subsidising phones any more.

If you play with the figures and do the sums you will see what I mean.
