Cellphone harassment

hmm, I'll have to say block it at your provider, seems the best bet.

So you can block numbers? Will Vodacom do this? Does anyone here know?

I've been getting the exact same thing, and even on my Home Telephone as well. People phoning to do surveys, etc. The worst is the Stupid Real Estate agents wanting to buy my house, at 6:00am in the morning!.. I just bought it for crying out loud why would I want to sell it!

I've just started awnsering my phone in Russian, My friends know its me and just laugh, if its somebody I dont know I just keep on speaking in Russian and they finally put the phone down. Hoping if I keep this up long enough I'll bre removed from all the lists, and it always has everyone around me crying with laughter when I do it!

Theoreticaly it would be possible to get the names of the directors of these companies if they are registered.

Get ur dialing fingers ready for between 00:01 AM and 07:00AM

Then try and sell them the same product that they try to flog from a diff company.

I love this idea!! :D So where do we hunt down the numbers!!

just say, "hey my batterie's about to go flat, call me on " and give them one of those porn numbers/R50 a minute numbers, but the ones that seem like normal cellphone numbers!"

If I get a call on my cell from one of these guys, I always just say "I'm sorry but I'm a bit busy right now, give me your <home number/cell number> and I'll give you a call later. They always say, "..umm, I'm afraid I can't do that."
So I say "Why not? Don't you want people phoning you up and disturbing you? Well buddy, now you know how I feel." Then I ask them very nicely to take my name off their list.

edit: This doesn't really help, but makes me feel better.

for your information, there's a great CD lurking online called 'Terrorizing Telemarketers' made by jim florentine - they're up to volume 3 I think..
do yourself a favour and listen to the freebie tracks (or source the whole thing via your favourite audio networks)
It'll give you a LOT of useful examples of how to make life hell for those telemarketers who call you..

(the free tracks are at http://www.jimflorentine.com/download.htm

Another guy who does this 'attack the swines who call you' is tom mabe - listen to some free tracks of his revenge on the telemarketers: http://www.tommabe.com/album.php

Usually as they start into their spiel, I interrupt them and simply say, "No thanks, I'm not interested".

They usually say, "Ok, thank you" and hang up. I had one tannie ask why, so I told her it was because I receive the same kind of call a couple of times a month, and I'm annoyed by them. Heh.

I used to interrupt them and demand where they got my number from, but it's usually a waste of time, because the caller is just using a list given to them by someone else, so they have no idea.

One time I didn't even ask, and the woman told me that the estate agent who sold my house gave them my number.

I swear, every time you need to put your phone number down on a form or something you should make the damn people sign a non-disclosure agreement. It irritates the hell out of me.

I have never had anything like that happen to me :)

Today I received yet another sales call on cellphone. They also claimed to have gotten my number from DataCell. When questioned, the sales lady told me that Datacell was a legitimate cellphone number database which they bought. I have now got the details of the call centre that called me and am taking it up further.

Unfortunately there is no law in this country for unsolicited phone calls.... yet

Referring to Dominic's post here.

I've had spam, but now it's stopped, thanx goodness... irritating as dingdong to receive an spammy sms in the wee-wee hours of the morning...

But now it's vodacom and other companies offering competitions and the such... wonder how many people fall for those advertisements?

3 to 4 years ago cellphone spam was nonexistent, but it looks to become a problem in future - if this happen then we'll have to turn off SMS reception on our cells and look to other technologies for messaging...

MXiT works just fine, but how long before it start to send out spam?

Oh, and the banks with their credit cards spam calls can go stuff their credit cards into their ... {insert bodily cavity here}

Anybody knowing of a spam filter for cellphones btw? :)
Forward the Message to 32335, then they will ask you for the number, Forward them the number. If its on their list they will sort it out, if its not, they will investigate it.

I did it yesterday with a stupid Nedbank SMS I got yesterday "inviting" me to get a loan from them, plus a note saying I could call them to unsubscribe.. Screw them, I never subscribed in the first place and dont have a single thing to do with Nedbank and any form

Whenever I receive a call and have identified it as a "marketing call" I calmly put my cellphone down on the desk and continue with whatever I was busy with. I've seen some of these calls last 5 minutes without me even holding the phone.

They stop calling me and it gives me an immense sense of satisfaction, the knowledge that they are paying through their necks for the call :-)
