I know there is a thread, but its old and nobody has recently commented.

can somebody suggest a good affordable place to have my cellphone insured?

Handset: Mate 7

Thanks Guys

I dont insure mine - the reasoning being the cost of the handset, divided by the premium - its sometimes cheaper to put the cash aside that you would pay as a premium.

Have my S4 insured but I'm going to cancel it as I don't think its worth it for what they cover.

When I wanted to add mine and my wife's S4's to my home contents the premium increased by R550 so I just told them to remove the phones as its not economically viable to pay that much

i just contacted an insurance company now, and the premiums were R202 on a R10 000 handset, but the excess was R1150.. Thats ridiculous, and its a shame that these companies charge these ridiculous amounts

Insurance companies are the devil. My s4 costs around R100 pm.
Completely off topic : I was incorrectly insured for nearly a year (Lapa was not on schedule) which was both mine and the insurers fault. I told them several times to add it and they claimed they did but I never checked. Anyway, fastfoward a year and I'm looking where to save so I go over my insurance policy and see the lapa is not on there. Furious I call them up, the lady tells me don't worry, we'll get it sorted for. Five minutes later shes tells me my new premium is R600-800 more (iirc). Told them where to get off and cancelled and moved my insurance.

/Rant over.

On Cell C there was no excess to claim from insurance. Should be similar if not the same for Vodacom

I had my S4 insured with Vodacom @ R169pm for R9500
It broke after falling too many times and I then ended up paying R1500 (R950 excess + better phone value) and got an S5.

This happened after 15 months of paying for insurance.
169*15+1500=R4035
That worked out well for me I think.

Cancelled insurance after my claim.

I wouldn't insure my phone, i'd rather save that premium on my own and deal with the eventualities as they come/ if they ever come. My phone is almost turning 24 months and there hasn't been trouble. It's a gambling game.

Its okay to do it that way and save up.. however, what happens in the event that your phone breaks, lost or stolen within the 1st 5 or 6 months? If you had saved 150 a month, that wouldnt get you anywhere. At least the insurance would cover you, no/yes?

i agree though as well, insurance is such a pain if you never claim, and at the end of it all could cost you way more than the phone itself. I think working things out is the safest bet imo. as an example, if your handset is valued at R10 000, and your premiums are 150 a month, over the lifespan of your contract ie what 21 months, that would equate to 3150 rand plus whatever excess you need to pay when claiming.

Its not too bad, but if you run with cellphone insurance on the same phone for more than 2 years, then you have problems, as the phone value will just depreciate over time
