I don't want to sound like a illuminati freak but to what extend will this information be used and who will have access to this information.

The news artical states the new rica law will be used to combat cellphone crime. How are they goining to do this? Will the every day cell users calls be recorded and screened? If this is the cases how will this afect our privacy?

Details seems very vague.

Only the honest, non-crims will register their phones, as they currently do with their radio and tv licences, gun licences, car registrations and FICA details. So what is the purpose of this again ? Seems to me to locate where all the honest folk live...

You mean like only the criminals should be afraid of having their home telephones bugged?

Well gee, in this country where responsible governing is not really the watch word, this might bother you. When you make a call from your cell phone, they will know 1) Who you are, 2) Where you live and most importantly 3) Whether you are home.

I guess we could all just do the ostrich thing and pretend this cell phone registering idea is another great, sensible idea designed to protect the nation's precious citizens from the criminal majority.

Unless there is a very thorough verification of ID and address process, submitting the required documents means nothing. For criminals to submit false documentation (including ID's) is very easy.

By thorough I don't mean just looking at the documents and trying to spot something. There has to be a process where the documents received are compared with indedendent sources.

From your link:

Those in an informal residence should provide the address of a school or church closest to the area in which they lived.

Sounds like an excellent way to stop fraud.

Guess who's going to pay for these registration costs. Guess who the government will make pay to maintain their database.

Also how stupid is this? Why should contract customers have to do this, surely they are paying the company and as such the company has all these details already?

I agree. Its just stupid. If they wanted to combat cellphone crime they could have done so already as they have the means already.:D

Hell, with this place's management, they'd probably throw you in jail because they caught you talking on your phone (which they thought belonged to someone else).

"Registering your cell phone is unnecessary and a very bad idea. Cell phone numbers are unpublished. If you provide your cell phone number to the national list, suddenly, it becomes a published number. The lists of numbers must be purchased by telemarketers so they can comply with the do not call registry. It would be extremely easy for unscrupulous entities and foreign, international entities to get their hands on the numbers. Your best bet is to avoid registering your cell phone."

Does anyone know where else this system has been implemented?

Apparently unregistered sim will be deactivated after 18months!

Is this not invasion of privacy?:D

How would they know that?

Triangulation using the cell towers that your call is connected through I think.

Recently I installed google maps on my HTC that does NOT have a GPS. It can still pinpoint my location with reasonable and sometimes plain scary accuracy.

Correct. In fact most vehicle tracking systems run on GSM, only connecting to a satelite if no signal(GPRS/EDGE) is pesent.:D

Meh, if they're really interested to know where I am, let them. On the flip side, if a mugger/hijacker/general lowlife was dumb enough to use your phone after stealing it from you it would pinpoint him too.

If you're not at home, maybe the wifey or kiddies are. That makes your house an easy target for robbers and your family an easy target for sadists.

You still want them to know where you are?

So many things that are just wrong about this but it's not like we have a choice.

So they'll get the info they need - but they don't get to make a copy of my ID.

The way around this is to create a CC and register your phone as a business phone/corporate phone. That has to work as not all sims will be personal, many will be company owned sims - then -f them!

We do, we can all boycot this, let them deactivate every single SIM which hasn't registered. You'll see VC/MTN CEOs convincing their ANC govt buddies to abort this law.

my thoughts exactly.
