Not to worry, they will all lose their jobs when the powers that be think they are too much of a political liability - just like the rest of the government. Elections coming up...

Of course the whole firm is a joke...
 
lol - how funny!. - are we really that surprised in ICASA's failure to do anything!.
 
Like they were ever "on the hook".
 
What a convenient way to string out the process a bit longer, but of course ICASA would never do that. :D

Icasa will now have to issue a new discussion document soliciting written comment from the public and other interested parties, as required by the ECA.

Oh right, so its not ICASA's fault, its the ECA... My mistake.

During their submissions to Icasa in September last year, Vodacom and MTN lashed out at the regulator, describing its discussion document as flawed. Arguing that tariffs in SA were reasonably fair, the cellular operators contended that Icasa should have instead left it to the market to determine pricing issues, as intervening could instead negatively affect consumers.

Oh course they lashed out. Flawed or not it was going to get them to reduce their charges. They would be being negligent if they didn't resist. The regulator is there to stand up to corporates when they are abusing their position... Don't be a regulator if you want to make friends, its not your job.

So, you might want a top job in industry after your term in the regulator; for me being an honest, fair, firm, at times un-popular regulator would be a far stronger candidate than would a weak, manipulated puppet.

Being fair though, the whole political mess involving DoC, Trade & Industry, Telkom ownership, ECA, Neotel, Infraco etc etc, makes for a pretty ungovernable, unregulatable mess. Loopholes and conflicting priorities abound, leaving the big businesses to quietly keep taking the money...

With the new discussion document set to be made available for public comment later this month, the cellular operators - plus fixed-line operator Telkom - will again be hauled before Icasa to explain their pricing structures.

And no-one at ICASA saw the ECA coming???

You know... The ECA. That bit of legislation that has been in development for at least 2 years? The one that was legislated 2 months before ICASA held its hearings?

I bet the amount of money wasted on this exercise is greater than the cost of firing and replacing whoever set it up in the first place. Not that it'll ever happen :mad:
 
They are going to implement ICTA to fix ECA, just stay ahead with the excuses.:D
 
Now why is this news? Nobody expected any change, did you? o? you did ooops sorry it ain't going to happen.
