Celphone upgrade - what to get?

I see i can upgrade my cellphone again next month?
Currently using the ancient Nokia 6600.

Looking for something with more PDA like functions, like the Nokia 9300i. (Email, mobile office, full kb, wifi) Don't accutally need a camera.

Is there any other phones to concider at this stage or should i just wait a while?
 
Not many phones I know of use or have WiFi built in.

The one I am wanting to get (contract expired June) is the N80. This one has WiFi support.

But Vodacom is dragging their feet... :(
 
Not true, if I remember correctly. Vodacom failed the N80 for some reason, so they are actually waiting for Nokia, I believe.

I am also waiting for Nokia. I am waiting for them to supply software that will allow me to force my N70 to use 3G only, and not jump to GPrs all the time.

P900

I currently use a P900 but I am now looking at the imate kjam. I would hve considered the new P990 but I think that windowa mobile is a better os then Simbian.

Ha Ha me too!! and i am due an upgrade.

From what i have gathered.

N80 has wifi which works pretty well but a very limited SIP implementation, which does not allow SIP calls, but some SIP video once a CS call has been established.

E60, E61, E70 Has wifi and a full SIP protocol, BUT no NAT traversal or STUN support. In effect you can use your Cell phone as a sip handset provided your SIP server is on the same side of your firewall. ie you CANT use SIP at a wifi hotspot. However apparently some SIP providers are using NAT reversal and these will work.

Other option i guess is something like the Imate Jamin comes with skype.

I think we are probably 12 months away from an affordable phone with a reliable SIP client.

What is not true?

V3G stated in another thread (in the last 2 weeks or so) the phone has cleared on Vodacom's side and can be expected imminently.

where V3G states - "The N80 failed testing and even now was released on concession with some issues unresolved. But is has been released so should be on the way to the channel."

Make sure what your primary application will be:

1) If you want a phone with some PDA capabilities, look at the Nokia type devices.

2) If you want a PDA that can also be your phone, look at the i-mates. The K-Jam probably has the best form factor currently but wait for the new HSDPA version.

3) If you want a super-PDA that can act as a phone on occasion, look at the JasJar.

4) Remember, converged devices are always a compromise. Some people still prefer a 'proper' phone + a 'proper' PDA.
 
I'm using the Nokia 9300i and I'm very happy with it. It's surprisingly small. The full keyboard works great. It closes like a book thus protecting the screen. No stylus. Wide screen works better for reading e-mail, docs and spreadsheets. And with some extra software it works like a Blackberry pulling e-mail on a preset schedule. Only thing missing on the phone is proper MP3 player.

There's also nothing like the JasJar's battery life, or rather the lack of it...:mad:

I use mine just as a micro-notebook, if I start making calls, I kill it in a morning.

Can anyone confirm if these phones have been tested by Vodacom? I mean the E60, E61 and the E70 has been on the international market since late last year whilst the Samsung ZV50 was only announced in March this year.

I would just like to know if I'm waiting in vain for these phones to show up?

Jip, that is also true. But then again, if you see what you get out of your Jasjar then it's fine.

Like I heard today from someone, it's the most technology advanced phone.
 
I have been playing with a JasJar for the past few days and I want one its a bit bulky (bigger and heavier than my Ipaq). Its awesome like having a mini notebook with onboard 3G.
 
HSDPA on i-mate?

It's all a function of desire / budget.

As a self-confessed gadget junkie, I don't wait, but it's very painful on the finances.

(I'm so OT here, ic and GayTechie are going to lynch me; but I just got a Roomba and a Scoomba: http://www.irobot.com)

The problem with the phone manufacturers is that they announce phones long before the things are commercially available and/or stable.

In the case of the new i-mate, I'd say another 3 months probably, but that's a pure thumb-suck.
