Census 2011

Dont think so - census runs for 3 weeks, why would they only make 1 day an public holiday ??

Didn't know it was 3 weeks long, thought it was only two days.

The biggest census ever conducted in South Africa will take place on the night of 9 and 10 October 2011.

Most likely mistaken, but I remember hearing something about making it a public holiday so it has more respondents.

I've never been "counted" ...neither has anyone I know.
I reckon the census takers avoid security complexes completely

Thats when it starts.

It will run up to the 30th October if I'm not mistaken.

Yeah... fair enuf..

But you are still legally obliged to answer the questions.

Why is everyone up in arms over just answering a few questions? What's it going to hurt? What will it matter five minutes after death?

I'm surprised nobody has challenged it in the Con. Court.

By those terms it looks to me like you would only be required to answer the questions that are already public knowledge. How many kids you have and basics like that. The vast majority of those questions could easily fall under right to privacy and dignity.

Note IANAL.

Beware people asking you for ID numbers, bank account numbers or other info.

I saw the tail-end of an ad. in which they seemed to be promoting the public to call the Stats SA / Census 2011 Call Centre # 0800-110-248 if one has any doubts about whose arrived at your front door ...
we are apparently entitled to call them & quote the names of census-takers, to see if they're officially listed at the call centre.

If everyone phones in, it'll probably take about a month longer to complete the census :p

Census - Workers

With the South African Census process beginning, people are advised to be cooperative, but cautious, so as not to become a victim of fraud or identity theft.

The first phase of the 2010 Census is completed where Census Workers verifying the addresses of households across the country.

Eventually, more than 140,000 Census workers will count every person in the South Africa (START DATE 10 OCTOBER) and will gather information about every person living at each address including name, age, gender, race, and other relevant data.

The big question is - how do you tell the difference between a Census worker and a con artist?

  1. If a Census worker knocks on your door, they will have a badge, a handheld device, a Census Bureau canvas bag, and a confidentiality notice.
  2. Ask to see their identification and their badge before answering their questions.
  3. However, you should never invite anyone you don't know into your home.
  4. Census workers are currently only knocking on doors to verify address information.
  5. Do not give your identity number, credit card or banking information to anyone, even if they claim they need it for the Census.
REMEMBER, NO MATTER WHAT THEY ASK, YOU REALLY ONLY NEED TO TELL THEM HOW MANY PEOPLE LIVE AT YOUR ADDRESS.
  6. While the Census Bureau might ask for basic financial information, such as a salary range, YOU DON'T HAVE TO ANSWER ANYTHING AT ALL ABOUT YOUR FINANCIAL SITUATION.

The Census Bureau will not ask for bank account, or credit card numbers, nor will employees solicit donations. Any one asking for that information is NOT with the Census Bureau.

REMEMBER, THE CENSUS BUREAU HAS DECIDED NOT TO WORK WITH ACORN ON GATHERING THIS INFORMATION.

No Acorn worker should approach you saying he/she is with the Census Bureau.

Eventually, Census workers may contact you by telephone, mail, or in person at home.
However, the Census Bureau will not contact you by Email, so be on the lookout for Email scams impersonating the Census.
Never click on a link or open any attachments in an Email that are supposedly from the Census Bureau.

Kind regards

OK, why not publish all the answers from your questionnaire here ...................................... .

Reluctant? Then you've answered your own question.

There are five of us living in my house. Two adults, three kids. Three males, two females.
We have lived there for 11 years.
We are in the R500k to R600k annual income bracket.

... anything else.

BTW, this is a public forum.
Your answers to the Census Questions will be way more private than this.

I have a problem with my name and address being attached to my personal and private information.

Would one fall foul of the law if you refused to submit these two details but answered everything else anonymously ?

No, but I am pretty sure the guy who collects your form from you will then be able to fill in your address anyway.

BTW, the government probably already has all that info.

Agreed but it's not linked to the details in the census....

I thought a census was supposed to be anonymous ?

It's based on advice given by the Better Business Bureau regarding the last census taken in the US and seems to have no bearing on SA.
