There was that great study that looked at the rates at which women studied STEM subjects in countries ranging from Iran and Iraq (third world and VERY biased against women) to Sweden (first world and supposedly gender neutral).

In which countries did more women choose to study STEM subjects? Hint: not Sweden.

In other words, in first world countries with very progressive norms in which women are encouraged to study whatever they want, even in countries that have feminist governments, women do not choose to study STEM subjects. Plenty of encouragement and funding is there for them, but they just don't want to.

Of course it is far easier to just blame this on sexist men than to actually accept that maybe women just aren't all that interested in it.

It must be because of sexism, it can't possibly be due to the fact that one party is a better known physicist than another.
