Certain sms messages causes Message app to close

Anyone have a similar issue to this? Whenever I open an sms from a number not stored on my phone, like bank notifications or marketing smses, the messages app closes immediately. When opening an sms from a contact of mine, the app works as normal. This only started happening yesterday, and no new software updates in the last few days that I'm aware of.

Tried googling, one solution was to reset the messages app by clearing cache and data in the settings, but even that hasn't helped.

This is on a Huawei P30 Pro.

Same happens here with pinned messages on the Google Messages app. Started happening a few days ago probably after an update.

Hopefully just an issue with the latest update. Made Signal my default sms app for now, will check in a few days again to see if it's fixed itself.

Try and uninstall update?

My Google Messages app is working fine. No problem opening messages with OTP's from numbers not stored in phone.

Tried that but still the same issue, so I'm thinking it must be a hardware issue. Opening messages on the web works, so at least I have access to all my archived messages that way. Signal does a good enough job for any new smses.

I thought it was just me.

Recently got my Mate 10 Pro back after I had it repaired (they ended up replacing basically everything except the frame)

Was driving me nuts. I thought they (or I) did something wrong with software or the upgrade back to Android 10 (phone came out with Android 8 and I had to take it through the whole system update process).

I get this issue on some messages, while others seem fine. I haven't figured out what in the messages might cause it. But at a guess it might have to do with the Sept. update of the messages app - app store shows there is an update for Sept.

That's the one. Like I said, any SMSs from a google contact opens just fine, but everything else closes the app immediately.

First reaction but seems like my phone doesn't allow it weirdly, or I am missing something. will try to hunt an older apk. Its happening with more SMSes now.
