Why does everyone seem to want someone with A+/N+ certs for a junior techie - I know people who have it that dont know anything and ask me for advice yet I cant apply for the same job they can pffft how do self taught from a young age vs only started to learn after they graduated compare.

I'm looking at applying for a low level techie job while I complete my political science degree but it seems to be a no go without CompTias lame noclue certification. Any input.

Or, get a doctor to certify you. A+/N+ you must be mad :p

But, yeah, Gambit is probably right.

I work in a job where I constantly have to deal with other techies, and more often than not, they don't know what they are doing - apparently it's very easy to BS yourself into a techie job. My guess is that this is just a way for the smarter (lazier?) hr peeps to try to filter out the applicants that do not know what is going on... coincidentally, I found the people that turn up to an interview announcing "I'm MCSE/A+/N+/etc qualified, hire me now!", etc are the ones that don't know an IP address from their own arse.

At least if you're A+ qualified, you in theory know how to install a modem (I kid you not, I once had a techie call me to find out how to install a bog-standard modem), and with N+, you theoretically know how to set IPs, etc.

Thats my point I think thats such a ****ty qualification that I dont want it I know it already + I am going to go work for my bro in shanghai and do whatever he needs me to learn some unix etc to help with his servers - really not bothered to study basic **** I know when I would much rather move on to more advanced - as I said IT is not my career its a hobby I want to complete my political science degree - IT would just be a job to pay the bills.

Thanks

Heh got any techies jobs in CPT :P My problem is I know the work but they wont accept you for an interview or let you show what you are capable off without the piece of paper - and as I say I know people studying A+ that couldnt even tell you what linux is - yet they will get a job and I wont - retarded.

It IS quite silly, but at the end of the day, if you get a certification from any reputable organisation, prospective employers can be assured that have you met the minimum requirements for the certification. So it comes down to what the tertiary institution deems "necessary".
In my opinion, to get your foot in the door, your most feasible options are to either get the certifications, get some work experience or get a recommendation

Guys... it's a modem, not a time-machine... i.e. no flux-capacitor :p

Applied for the below - anything know what something like that pays per hour or for those 4 shifts a wekk? Considering its night shift etc.

Thanks
