(Chalk and) cheese !

I cannot stand casu marzu, which is effectively a rotten cheese. It is disgusting and why people would willingly put that stuff in their mouth is beyond me. And if you stretch the definition of the word somewhat, then the only other cheese I've ever despised was natto, which is a japanese cheese-like, soy-bean concoction of the foulest order. I'm not crazy about goat's cheese either, as the smell and taste remind me of my youth on a farm surrounded by goats that smelled awful.

Every other cheese I've ever eaten I've either been ambivalent about, or loved...

Gorgonzola - very creamy blue cheese - the best of all for me.
Like pretty much all of them, so no dislike for me ;)

Dislike: Processed cheese or as I call it plastic..

Cheese will be the death of me...

I once saw a program that shows how it's made. Fermented cheese are eaten by maggots to digest and process the cheese even more ... and then you eat the cheese ... maggots and all.

I'm a huge cheese addict. I love going on holiday to the Cape as there instead of a pudding most restaurants offer a cheese platter option as a desert instead. For my birthday instead of a cake my wife got me an awesome cheese platter.

Favorites:
Soft Gouda
Cheddar
Mature Gouda
Mature Cheddar
Creamy Blue
Blue rock
Heck any blue cheese
Camambert
Brie
Philadelphia cheese cakes (with one with the sweet chilli sauce)
Cream cheese
cottage cheese
Feta
Mozzarella

Dislike:
Processed cheese (the cheepo stuff at the supermarket)
Ementalla
Haloumi

When in France a few years back I finally tried the authentic French Camembert and Brie. They are very snobbish about their cheese there and insist on only using unpasteurized milk for the making of those two. In SA we don't allow that due to health regulations I think. Anyways, the cheese tasted rotten and was awful. I far prefer Simonsberg and Fairview Bree's and Camembert so call me a uncouth cheese philistine if you want but I almost gagged on the French cheese.

Like:

Camambert
Blue
Brie
Mozarella
Gouda
even Cheddar I suppose
FETA!

Dislike:

I've actually never tasted or experimented with anything I've not liked as yet.
Sure that I'm missing out on some cheeses in my "Like" section - but all cheese is good.
Though I don't think I'll have the stomach to try the rotten stuff.

The baguettes with cheese they sell on the streets in Paris are not what I imagined in my fantasies! The cheese tasted like plastic to me !

thats the trouble with fantasies, mostly they never match up ... for the most part though if you really want to
exp something good and note worthy your gonna have to look for it, street vendors very seldom produce
high quality produce.

That being said i keep seeing on one of those cooking channels the street vendors in
the uk and us that do all these amazing things with food and it makes me very sad to
say we don't have that kinds of culinary flair in good old sa even though we have a fast
diversity of cuisine and cultures in the country :{

Edit:

as for the cheeses:
white cheddar
Feta
haloumi
camembert, brie
and sometimes blue with crackers and konfyt but must be in the mood

Street food in Paris is okay but hardly on a par with the magnificent street food in South East Asia. The restaurants in Paris are a different story altogether - fantastic for the most part...

What I miss from France is the rural boulangeries. Nothing on earth like walking down a country lane at 7am in crisp cold to get a fresh baguette and coming back to have Brie and baguettes with a plunger of coffee for breakfast.

If you stay with a someone who lives there though, there cheese is usually fantastic. We had a supper one day of brie, baguettes and eggs cooked simply, it was fantastic, especially the bri. I suppose the vendors use cheap cra.p.

No doubt dude.. And the smell of the boulangeries as you walk down the streets...

Ah, good memories. The pastries were my favourite morning treat...

I hear we where incredibly unlucky with bread in France. In our 4 days in France almost every restaurant served bread and most of it was so dry I cut my mouth if I bit wrong. Very disappointed. Everyone else I have spoken to seems to have had amazing bread experiences in France.

Hmm.. I can remember the bread in restaurants being good, but nothing compared to the bakeries.

Cheese

My experience with cheese is incredibly limited so I'm looking for recommendations for some nice tasting cheese(although I know it's all relative) . I have tried our normal everyday cheeses and recently tried edham which I hated (was very bitter).

Which ones do you guys enjoy?
Edit: ok cool. On my phone so couldn't check it out. :)

Ok, don't think it warrants me starting a new thread just now.

But as figs have been mentioned here - I'd like to know where to get some good stuff in CPT please. Are they in season?
Mozzarella too - for a salad I'm wanting to try out.

I would also love to know! Love figs... Yum. As for mozzarella you can pick that up almost anywhere at most shops unless you are looking for something specific..?

Well - any old Mozza will do - but I know that certain aficionados will have a favourite :)
