Changes ahead for telecoms sector

I'll keep a positive light and say that the DoC is finally on the right track... who knows? Maybe this one time they'll actually pull finger and make us proud to be in SA.

If the DoC fails - can't we make a huge noise to make them look bad? as for Miss Cadbury :D ... call for her dismissal ???

so who wants to phone up the DoC, say they're from the Johannesburg 'Fox and Hound' quarterly magazine, and are asking for any info or currently embargoed releases from them, in this regard?

There's lots of talk about the DoC - so who's got some phone numbers to post here, so that forumites can start getting as well acquainted with them, as they are with various folks at ICASA?

What a joke.
What the government wants to announce is certainly NOT LLU. Its merely equal access for the 2nd operator.

True LLU would have seen all VANS operators gaining local loop access on the same terms as the SNO coupled with backhaul wholesaling legislation.

Thats yet another "policy determination" that will have neglible impact on prices...
yip - looks like *managed unbundling* of the LL

on the flip side have to see how these local infrastructure licences are going to pan out - right now dep min roy is saying hey VANS operators come and apply BUT there is no licensing framework for these licences to be issued and it s highly unlikely that ICASA will get round finalising this before another 2 years

NOT GOOD ENOUGH

You're right - its NOT GOOD ENOUGH but if they are really serIaaas, and this actually happens soon, its a step foward (even a small one)

Number portability should address that issue.

For some reason--probably oversight, number portability only applies to cell numbers--a lost opportunity if not addressed. :(

i am sure i heard something not so long ago about old plant lady making an announcement about liberalisation. she did we all got so excited i actually fell off my chair and then the next day she pulled a telkom (ie "bend over boy") and said umm sorry guys, even though that line is "vans may self provide" that is not how i intended it to be read.

so excuse me if i am on the pessimist side of this whole thing. I will be a believer under the following circumstances though.

1) planty actually does make the announcement as promised.
2) by June she hasnt changed her mind and revoked the statement
3) by december we see some form of proof that her "policy" is actually being followed.

I mean i issued a new policy yesterday. doesnt meen jack unless it is actually followed now does it?

Well thats just plain silly and yet shows a typical lack of foresight I've come to expect.

Last time we got what sounded like good news from icasa... Telscum gave us 1 Nov....

This news sounds even better..

I shudder to think what telkom's response is going to be

I've got some bad news, I've spoken to some IT managers and the SNO has already told them "no lower prices"
If we could stop paying the line rental we would have reasonably priced internet (albeit heavily shaped and little cap) Can't see how SNO are going to give us adsl and we still pay telkom for line rental. Sick.

If Ivy does what the article says I pledge to send her a huge bouquet of flowers and a thank you note.

tightwad - you know your money is safe

let's see how long it takes her to change her mind this time. I think she is sitting on a nice bunch of telkom shares. BEEautiful !

did anyone else notice how they quote that everything they promise is only possible if the new bill is passed... which apparently happens in teh next couple days, lets have a poll to find out how long ppl think the bill is going to take to get passed

The SNO are banking on the fact that customers will get better service from them than from Telkom.

You need people to switch first before you can show them better service.
I recon they'll have great opening specials and before you know it you're back where you started...

You beat me to it, exactly what I wanted to say. I agree 100%, this isn't true LLU, just equal access for the SNO. They need to allow VANs/ISPs to plug-in to the LL. There's no incentive for the SNO to display dramatically lower prices or Telkom even.

We need an open market!
