Charging for online news

Why pay for something you can get for free, the Internet is a huge beast, no way you control it. Stupid companies are still stuck in the old days, hell even China has trouble controlling their people and they are commies with minimal regard to human rights.

Charging for online news - will you pay?

Hell No!

"However, `open' need not mean free."

I lol'd yes sure, you make it open for everyone to pay... as the previous posters said, news is open source. You can't lock it up, copyright it and hold it for ransom behind a payment system

We already pay for it in some way.

Satellite tv, tv licences(a few people anyway), broadband fees.

All they will achieve is to have less people access their site. What they will gain in fees for accessing their site, they will lose in advertising. They probably believe the fees are a better revenue.

Somebody will then set up a site which allows free access with those annoying adverts popping up....

if they want us to pay, then the quality of their articles need to improve. no way I am paying for crap.

reminds me of when internet ads first started appearing and there was this huge uproar with ppl saying i will never visit a site that displays ads.............

if mybb started charging say a minimal R10 a year to be a member would you pay it? probably yes
and then R10 a month? also probably yes

If we have to pay for it, it should be ad-free.

btw this site syndicates virtually all of it's good articles.

Yes I'd pay. The problem at the moment is information overload. Having your information collected in one place if worth paying for (R10 pm no more).

The company I work for recently built a service to facility online subscriptions subscriptions. Pity its so difficult getting them to adopt.

When all is said and done, the news will still be free somewhere...

Most news comes from a limited number of providers. The outfits with correspondents on the ground - you have your - SAPA, Reuters, AP, AFP, InterFAX, etc. If those sources become locked down, the only way you'll be able to get the new is if someone releases it 'warez' style (copyright infrigement).

Some don't want to charge readers at all and would rather focus on getting more money from advertising.[\quote]

This is more what i'd like to see... i mean how much do the advertisers pay to put a ad in the newspaper(and internet) and then we are still expected to pay for the news online?
