Cheap 5.1 speakers

The question is more thana little ambiguous. How do you get audio from a stereo jack?
Guys guys guys lol. Im not expecting tru 5.1 surround sound. Im just looking for a stereo solution where i can make all 5 speakers work, in some sort of fake surround audio.

I understand the limitations of running something via a 3.5mm audio jack.

I use the dolby app from the windows store with my headpones. But you'd probably need something that creates a virtual surround stage and this normally comes with your sound card. Well the xonar (asus) does this. Virtual upmixing...

Can always go to the local Cash Crusaders or pawn shop and pick up a second hand 5.1 Dvd player, I still use all the speakers from such a set and the sub but I've changed to a dedicated amp, cheapy but it works and it means I can control each channel from the pc which is much better
Just so I understand, by amp, do you mean av reciever/amp or those stereo amps? And how do you control via pc. Only have those 2 pc speakers and a headphone. Never connected anythimg else.

A dedicated amp, ie not those tiny ones built into the speakers, av receiver yes. Use it to do amplification only, all your EQ settings and channel control can be done via the pc with something like EqualizerAPO. Reason being you can control what you want and how precise you want, amp settings especially cheap stuff is really rather poor or limited.

How will 5.1 sound work from a stereo jack?

The rear speaker effects are 'embedded' into the stereo channels
The center is (basically) derived by taking 50% signal from left / right speakers .

When I first got into audio in the late 90s, we needed a stereo VCR and a Dolby Pro Logic amplifier ... the DPL extracted the pseudo '5.1' from a stereo track (quite well!) and then DPLII / DPLIIZ etc expanded on this

"A Dolby Pro Logic home theater system includes four channels and five speakers of surround sound. Dolby Pro Logic is a matrix decoded multichannel surround sound system, meaning that it turns two-channel (stereo) sound into four channels of sound. The more advanced Dolby Pro Logic II produces five channels of sound"
