Cheap 5.1 speakers

Ah okay, that is a good deal I would say. My 10 year old Genius 5.1 set which probably cost me around R800 back then, I would probably now sell for double that now, if not more.

Will be far better then your TV speakers, I've got 3 different sets of Microlab speakers and they all work for the job their used for. Currently the smallest and cheapest set are being used to boost the sound on my sons TV in his gaming room and it's doing a decent job.

I have a Logitech Z640 set that I would let go at R500. It is a bit bulky to ship to Cape Town, though. Also, it connects with multiple 3.5mm jacks (colour coded).
 
If you have 5.1 output and stereo speakers the you need to downmix the signal. Have a look here for starters:
