Hi guys, anyone have an idea where i can get those R9 a month contracts.. There was a few a while back, where the total package per month costs R29 per month.. :D

both networks still offer them AFAIK. basically you get a very basic phone on a standard R100/R150-a-month contract and they reduce the rate per month. mtn also offers ones where you bring your own phone. check the retail specials on http://www.mtnsp.co.za - last page

At MTNSP, currently. (Call 083-1-808)

R9/month subscription gets you:

R50 airtime per month

PLUS

25 x SMS per month.

Note: No hardware included. Contract duration is 24 months.

Edit: Oh, didn't see your reply there, mobiler. :)

don't forget to add the R8 p/month cli fee or the R99 activation fee

The R9.99 deal for R50 airtime and 25 sms on Anytime 50 includes CLI. Itemised billing is optional extra. Sim and activation is free if you order from MTN Direct. I know cause I ordered two of them.

Vodacom has a topup R49 deal for R20 per month. Includes a Nokia 1208. Also free activation and sim if you order from Voda direct. That special AFAIK expires in the next few days.

Link? Sounds quite good..

Activation is free on MTN Direct, I have one of them and I have to pay R8,00 for CLI.

I got the R20 deal through Vodacom direct. No CLIP, no itemised billing. The Nokia 1208 is very basic, but still a decent spare phone. Big difference for me between the two deals is that the MTN one does not have an off peak rate, it is one fixed rate (anytime contract) whereas the vodacom 49s top up has nice low off peak rates. So your R49 airtime goes a little further.

Using this contract as an "evening" phone, and I have an MTN contract for during the day.

*edit*
Here are the links comparing the two different tariff options:

I called them specifically about this and they said CLI is free. Itemised billing is optional extra. Guess I will have to wait for my first bill then.

You can choose on MTN Anytime 50 to have it on offpeak. My own R9.99 line is an offpeak line and my "house" line will be a normal (peak) one.

I see that CLI was discounted by the exact cost on my current MTN bill, so you might be right here. Will have to see if it continues like this! CLI is a bit of a ripoff charge in my opinion, should always have been free.

I still wanted the option to call during peak hours without having to buy airtime (unless I am misunderstanding how the offpeak 50 works). The spare phone is for when I'm out climbing or on holiday and I won't mind too much if I get mugged... :o (or just lose the phone)

*edit* Whoops. Looks like I did misunderstand. Oh well. I see you can use the R50 off peak package airtime during the day as well. MTN looks like the better deal if you don't need a phone.

I not a fan of "free off peak minute" contracts anymore. I always have to call in peak time and then my bill is high anyway.

Hmm, thats true with me as well, any special with 100 anytime minutes? Most of my calls are also during the day.. :(

Anyone know if Cellc and Vodacom has the same special for prepaid as MTN where you bring your own phone.. cant find anything on their websites!

MTN now has the Nokia 1202 for R19/month on Anytime 50. CLI and itemised billing optional extra. Seems to be a "reply" to the recent Vodacom Topup 49 for R19/month for the 1208.
