Need a tablet for varsity, my textbooks weigh over 20kg its like doing squats for 8 hours a day...
iPads are way too expensive, even 2nd hand, samsung tablets are better but still a bit pricey @ around 2-2.5k

I was hoping to spend around 1.5k on a cheap tablet, used for nothing more than textbooks and probs instagram when the lecturer is being *** boring...

The problem is I don't know if any of these other brand tablets are usable or just pure ***, any advice?

Lenovo is good for the better than dirt cheap but still affordable tabs. I have had a 7" for a couple of years, still going strong. The Vodacom Smart Tab also seems to be liked. Or a Huawei maybe.

Look around, I am sure you can find something decent in your price range.

Lenovo and Huawei 10" tabs are the best. Vodacom Smart Tab is also great if you want to go cheap.

Sansui windows 7" and 8" is on special at HiFi Corp. free office 365 1year subscription included
7inch = 499
8inch = 799

Are they good?Nope,but fun to mess around with

They are normally bad TBH. The Samsungs and Lenovos have much better screens.

Asus on the other hand is the win, but expensive.

When it comes to cheap tablets, no western company can best China brands.
But when you go up in price, yes, by all means buy a western brand

Got my little one a Lenovo tab.......

the corners are chipped... it falls everyday...

but it is still going strong...

You need FHD - 1920x1080. 1028x800 will be too grainy. 8" is workable but barely. 8.9" was better but maybe 9.7"-10.1" is the aim. Otherwise you will end up zooming and panning.

Something like ths Teclast 98 Octa Core R1314 although shipping from China is 3 weeks and will sit at the local postal services twice as long if you are lucky.
