Cheap uncapped wireless, if there is such a thing?

Hi there

I am currently providing a client of mine with Business ADSL line, but he is now claiming that he is testing a wireless internet solution that is 10x faster than the Business ADSL line and a fraction of the price.

I am wondering if this is possible, the worst thing is that he is getting aggressive with me telling me that I must find him a better solution, but refuses to tell me what he is currently testing.

I am wondering what Wireless solutions are available that is faster than a 4meg ADSL line that has a fibre backbone, but is cheaper?

Tell him to go enjoy his line for a month and when he's ready to actually pay for something that'll keep working come speak to you :)

I hate it when people make false promises... I for one are going to setup some wireless internet setups, but I try to tell the pros and cons as well as the difference in what is theoretically possible and physically... and to tell somebody the wireless internet solution is 10x faster is a bunch of BS :(

It makes the life for those of us that's actually trying to provide a service much more difficult... too many times have I had to fix pc's that these fly by night people built/repaired...

Reliable

Pick any 2.
Most of the time, the Reliable option is the difficult part to find

the only uncapped service i know that is cheap is skytec, cheap= yes, uncapped=yes, reliable= 7/10
 
sawireless is testing their 10Meg local and 2Meg international system at present, more feedback as and when available..

yeah but whats the pricing and how much cap do you get? uncapped unshapped? cuz if it's shaped or capped then whats the point of having such a fast line if you can just burn it in 2 or 3 days lol

some feedback with regards to capping etc?

Just providing my 2c. In the current market in SA, you are not going to find a cheap uncapped wireless soultion that is reliable. Maybe at the end of the year or next year, but not now.
 
lol, didnt mean to sound aggressive dude, sorry if it sounded like that, my bad. yeah. i have an uncapped wireless service at 128k for R350 a month. yeah during the day sometimes they limit it which i dont understand why, but during the night it's ok. i wont post exact statistics on what i get in a average month as the owner is also a member here, but once when i was downloading off international sites i got between 25GB - 30GB in 1 MONTH!!!!!!!!!!!!

Its probably because its not true uncapped. They just throttle you when you reach a certain speed, cap etc.

But if your looking for faster than 4mb adsl then there aren't many products that fit your price range, pity, but hopefully soon

Is there a problem with hosting your website overseas? Since bandwidth on overseas web servers is about 1/10th the cost of local I can't see anyone would have an issue with this.

I also host my website overseas because I love the Cpanel / Fantastico / WHM system it uses and I cant be bothered to setup my own server locally.

In any event Vanilla are not promoting an uncapped 5mbps wireless solution. At the contention ratios supplied it would not be possible. It is a pure pay per meg system.

Why do I care? Well I host the wireless backbone that Vanilla uses to deliver their service. So I must defend their product. If anyone doubts the service you are welcome to contact myself or Vanilla to test it out.

I'd expect a provider to be able to host their own basic infrastructure.
Would you trust an Electrician who couldn't change a light bulb?

Usually what you say makes a lot of sense, but I don't see the relevance of the statements here. I am not sure how this analogy ties in.

Would I trust an electrician to install my TV set even though he does not build TV sets himself?

Would I trust my web designer to design my website even though he does not run his own ISP infrastructure?

I feel you are looking for issues in the wrong place. If Vanilla are delivering bad service or or not delivering on the product that they are selling, those are reasons to take up an opposing viewpoint. Where you host your website is irrelevant and I don't see how it adds anything useful to this discussion.

How about finding someone who uses the service and ask their viewpoint? Then you actually have something to support or defend.

Hi, regards the Vanilla website. Vanilla has infrastructure in the US and UK and plenty in SA. Of course we can host our website in SA, we host many dozens of websites here. I never considered it important to host it in SA but I see that it is important to you, so I'll move it. :)
Just so that you know the the reason why we host overseas by default is because we once hosted a bunch of South African mp3's that we sponsored in order to promote local artists. It became really popular and we ended up with over 2TB of traffic in a month. Even in the US that costs a few $'s in SA it would cost >R15k. It's a matter of simple economics.
Regards the first point, I am not sure if anything is cheaper than uncapped adsl. Business dsl, maybe. Faster yes, but there are some interesting uncapped solutions out there that aren't the standard (or banded) IS business dsl package.

Nothing to do with trust. Actually I used to think our main website is far less important than most of the infrastructure we do host on our own infrastructure. I'm flattered that you think that Vanilla advertising is so critical. Thanks.

This is a little presumptuous and certainly something that I wouldn't expect from a *master*. I expect that you may be using a cheap local only account and you're frustrated you cannot see our website. I'm sorry about that, I can understand such frustration but it's no reason to take out your frustrations. One of the reasons why we're called Vanilla is because we are 'no frills'. That means we keep our overheads low and similarly our pricing as competitive as possible. We don't waste. I've had people sending me messages putting down myadsl forums because of this comment and that's not fair to your community.
