Cheaper broadband

I've been waiting for 10 years for proper Internet. I don't really know how to respond to these articles anymore.

Could, maybe, sometime soon, if, when, but, once upon a time in dreamland.

When last did we actually hear of the launch of an actual alternative? IBurst?

Mweb...

I mean sure, its an alternative and they claim bigger caps and undercutting Telkom, but the company name is just so synonymous with inflated cost w.r.t. internet access, might even be more so than Telkom.

WiMax sucks, we need cheeper ADSL access!! The contention for bandwidth and speed on the base stations are just not good enough.

DSL and Fibre are the only real broadband technologies available. The radio alternatives just cannot compete, even future technologies, due to the contention for speed and bandwidht experienced at the edge :(

Wireless is still not the answer or the future for broadly available high bandwidth connections - as the article says. There some basic physics problems which the marketing literature doesn't cover. Shared Spectrum. There is only so much information that can flow through and piece of space at anyone time. improved coding and hardware, new spectrum, directional antennas, smaller cell sizes etc. all allow faster connections for individual users sure; but the shared spectrum remains that, shared, and is a hard limit. You can keep decreasing the cell size, or increase antenna directionality, until you have a one consumer per 'cell', and each cell needs backhaul, so we're pretty much back to physical connection.

I'm looking to the future where we have broadband speeds that can deliver HD tv, VOD, integrated multimedia as well as all the other applications we can't imagine yet. That will require so much more bandwidth than a wireless infrastructure can provide.

Wireless is great and has its place. But we still have to get the local loop sorted out. Its going to be tough, but its the only way.

I find any article written by Financial Mail on the issues of tech (such as broadband) usually get it wrong and are written by someone who doesnt fully understand the market from the operations point of view.

Blah blah blah, good message, throw money into <insert company here>.. blah blah...

Realistic

we need to be realistic in this country, and i beleive Icasa are trying to dig themselves out of a very deep hole. the problem is they are digging with spoons.

we use alot of Wireless bridges etc at our work, and they are great in terms of transferring general data such as email, internet etc. but when it comes to high quality datas such as streaming video it is not comparable to high speed fixed line access such as fibreoptic etc.

also a big problem with wireless links are stability. the stabilitity of these links leave alot to be desired and down time is all to frequent.

Icasa and SA need to be looking at viable fixed line alternatives. the world is moving along at an incredible pace, but we in SA sit here way behind the pack looking at ways to fall more behind. we need to focus forward and do something.

Get a R1 everytime I hear Broadband is going to get better I would be so rich that I could move out of S.A! ;)

Really???

FM produces some well researched articles that tend to be very factual. While consumers are getting tired of all this 'imminent' nonsense - the reality is that it is happening albeit slower than we would all like.

I agree with XCentricdave's sentiments on the physical limits of the RF space - but the reality is that there are many objectives for the industry aside from providing power users with the biggest fastest pipes.

i agree

Quote "unregulated ISM band but interference from illegal wireless ISPs "
if its unregulated then the Wisps are not illegal.

Wooohooo! Uhm... not. *sigh*

Unfortunately, the only broadband that provides the kind of latency and consistency I need is Unshaped ADSL. Until someone can replace *that* for me, I'm going to be Telkom's prison bitch for a little while longer...

Is that why you stopped bothering to read them?
