Is there really a difference if you not gonna use it for gaming... just storage mainly (movies, photo's, etc)...

Esquire is a distributor not RETAIL. Therefore the excluded tax price.
 
i do notice a difference between 7200 and 5400....just my opinion though :)

when I copy something, i want it copied ASAP! :P
 
I've had an Vantec Nexstar for about 3years now, running 320GB Seagate, it's been knocked around, bashed, dropped and accidentally kicked once, still no complaints, even the LED is still working.

Great news for both Vantec and Seagate

I'd rather pay less and wait a few secs/mins more for something to copy, lol, the life of a student :D:D
 
Must go collect my one I ordered from Esquire today; did not have time to get to the store this afternoon. Will be using it for data storage only, so 5400 is fine.

Same here. If I wanted to copy something and go have a cup of coffee while it did that then I wouldn't have gone and upgraded my machine.

But it does raise the question of exactly how much faster a 7200rpm is against a 5400rpm. Let me google that for myself.

Searching for 5400rpm vs 7200rpm on google just winds up with a load of notebook HD comparisons. I guess not many consider 5400rpm as a desktop drive spin speed.

Some interesting notes on this one:

As expected, lower latency on the 7200rpm (31% or something which is... uhm... 2ms). Faster sustained speeds for large files, etc. Also quite a few things can affect it. In that link they show a large 4200rpm drive being quicker than a small 7200rpm drive.

The power consumption thing is actually interesting. 7200rpm requires more power, but for shorter amounts of time. So if you think about it a 5400rpm drive could actually consume more power as it needs more time to do the job.

I guess one could also say if 5400rpm made no difference against 7200rpm then WD should stop making the 10,000rpm Raptor. :D

Ah, bugger it, I'm switching to 15,000rpm SAS drives. :D
 
While collecting my Samsung 1TB (1000GB/R54/32M) from Esquire, I was enticed into buying the Freecom hard drive dock as well. Combined cost = R955.

I already have the Vantec Nexstar hdd dock, so this is a handy addition!
 
It seems like no one has the Samsung 1TB HDD that was on special recently for R699.
 
R699? You sure that wasn't a 1.5TB or 2TB?

Or perhaps a 2.5" (laptop) sized 1TB?

Samsung 3.5" (desktop) HDDs go for just north of R500...

Makro has a Samsung 1TB for R999 but it looks like a new model,probably USB powered.
CNA has the older 1.5TB for R999 and game has the 2TB for R1 299.
The best deal I've seen thus far is the Verbatim 1TB at Kalahari for R550,and the Freecom 1.5TB at Esquire for R699.

This is a 3.5 inch and the one at Makro is the new 2.5 inch usb powered Samsung. I got 1 at Game 2 months ago for R899.
