I'm tempted to get a Netbook - mostly for travelling. I shouldn't, because I could just take my laptop with me, but hey, who turns down the opportunity to get a new gadget? On the other hand, I don't really want to spend a lot of money... what is the average price for a lower-end netbook?

Probably just over R3000, I was really lucky and got my dad an Acer Aspire one with 160gb HDD for R2500. Haven't seen that price again.

I've got a really nice MSI wind if you want, unfortunately I'm in Gauteng.

Hmm, that's more than I had hoped. I'll just have to either use my phone or my laptop (shame, poor me, no excuse to buy a new toy )

Wow, you guys are sharks!

Acer Aspire One A110L is R1999 at Incredible Connection. I've seen demo models for R1500.

Intel Atom N270 @ 1.6GHz (with Hyperthreading)
512MB DDR2 RAM
8GB Solid-state drive
Card readers
Wireless
Webcam
8.9" LED-backlit LCD
3-cell battery (provides me with about 3 hours of usage)
Linpus Linux Lite (offers basic computer usage), and runs Ubuntu fantastically

If you aren't comfortable sorting out Ubuntu and are in the Gauteng area, give me a shout.

Any particular reason?

I guess not.

Well here's my experience:

I've been using this particular model (with the 8GB SSD) for almost a year now. So has my gf. So has my mom. So have 3 of my friends. We're all running Ubuntu, and enjoying it immensely.

Haven't had any problems (yet).

If you're looking for a netbook that truly embodies what a netbook is (a low-cost, low-performance, ultra-mobile computer), then the A110L is great. The user experience on more expensive netbooks will NOT be much better for the types of tasks that one performs on-the-run.

Small screen? Sure. It's inherent in the small size.

Low graphics performance? Sure. But there's more than enough juice to run home and office tasks. It's just not a demon of a gaming machine. It's a netbook.

Sorry to hijack the thread but I don't particularly want to start a new thread on a similar topic and my forum search fu is failing.

I'm lookng to get a netbook for university mainly for the amazing battery life they get so I should theoretically be able to use it to take notes in lectures.
However having something that can play games for when I'm feeling anti-social would also be nice.

Hence can netbooks play games at all? I'm not looking to play anything hectic. I mainly play old classics like Age of Empires 2 and Starcraft. I think the most demanding game would be Warcraft 3

This is the particular model I'm looking at

Sorry for not answering.... My reason (gentle hyperbole notwithstanding) is that it's just too small, too limited, too cramped, to be useful for me. 8gb is barely enough to run an OS on... Then trying to use Windows menus in a poor quality screen barely bigger than a smartphone? No thanks....

Aspire One 8GB SSD from IC - R2000 if you can find any still in stock.

I installed another 512mb RAM and run Tiny Windows 7 and it runs awesome!

So basically, ANY netbook? Since screen-sizes is an issue, and netbooks are, by definition, small?

I also have a Acer A110 Netbook, upgraded the ram to 1.5Gb, running Ubuntu netbook remix. It handels everything fine. For Gaming i have my desktop.
Quite nice to lay in bed watching a movie via wireless from server. :)

We're talking about the 8.9" Aspires here aren't we? The ones with dull backlighting running an obscure Linux derivative.... No don't get me wrong I'd love an MSI Wind or so.... but I'd never recommend one of those things to anyone.

Well clearly you had a look at a lemon.

The A110L screen is as bright as they come, and default operating systems aren't for everyone. Even Windows.

I'll take the Pepsi challenge any day.

Gigabyte BookTop 10.1" Netbook Computer (M1022C) - R 2,899.00 incl VAT

Asus EEE PC 10.1" Netbook Computer (1001HA) - Black Textured - R 2,999.00 incl VAT

Both from Nivo.

Generally the prices in stores(excluding Incredible Connection at times) are cheaper than what has been posted.

P.S. The Gigabyte has a 250GB and 1.3MP webcam :p.

I notice that Sahara has a 10.1" Intel Atom N270 1.6Ghz with 160gb hdd and 1gb ram on sale at the moment. I know a few people with them and they're very pleased (once they install windows).
