Cheapest PS3 Anyone?

Touche! :D

Having worked for a large insurance company I can attest to their being companies with that sort of marketing budget, with only basic staff.

Scotty, of course we all want to live in peace and harmony, but that includes myself or anyone else being able to present a sound, rational perspective on console preference. :)

On live being free, yeah, we'd all love that, or even just more free stuff for gold members, but I still see more than enough value in it, and I'm paying the absolute most possible - I'm on UK month by month which costs me R70 a month. By comparison that's:

A movie popcorn coke and sweets
-or-Beer for a night out
-or-Half portion of Beef Ribs at Cattle Baron
-or-2 Steers meals
-or-2 Medium Pizza's
-or-1 Gb prepaid bandwidth

Considering I play for at least 2-3 hours every night, that's not bad.

Considering the multiplatform nature of most games, we've all got more in common than difference. I'm sorry if enthusiasm comes across as "PS3 bashing" but it's not, once the PS3 gets some momentum the PS3 crowd will be doing much the same.

Christ I hope not, because really, it's beyond lame.

On live... etc etc etc
Now perhaps you guys can educate me a bit......
What I want to know is you guys pay for this right? Not you specifically Doobs, but rather the "average" user who just pays to be able to use the network. Where exactly is the value? Almost signed up when I had an X360... what would have I been paying for?
I mean if Gavin states that XBL uses a P2P system, where exactly is the value considering you using your own system to host a game? Surely a paid for system would mean a hosted server or something? What piece of th puzzle am I missing here? Please advise :)

You do realise you had a free months Live when you had your system?

Back to the point.....

You don't pay for the general connection you only pay for online multiplayer.

I am not 100% sure that all games are P2P but if we take Gears itself for example.

You are paying for the upkeep of the game, stopping the glitches and what not.
You pay for the ranking and the upkeep of the leaderboards
You pay for the system that links you all together.

The benefit of paying over not paying is that you know Microsoft are not going to turn off servers which are not popular. Sony makes the online multiplayer portion the developers problem and they have no unified service as of yet for the developers to work with.

Microsoft forces every developer to make every game online aware, It doesn't matter what game I put into my Xbox 360 it will/can interact with the Xbox Live population some how..

Pretty simple really, firstly you can't game online without gold. With that comes a few inherent features like the unified friends list, easy invites etc. There's no searching for servers, or waiting for punkbuster, it's turn on, disc in, and go.

You can access all content with silver, you just can't game. Gold does however get early access to premium content - quite a few of the highly anticipated game demo's get released to gold users first. The other stuff is less tangiable to SA users because lag prevents us from playing a lot of ranked games, but truskill makes games more balanced, you don't get the situation you typically get on SAIX servers where games are often dominated by one or two stacked clans.

Once you've gamed on live, online PC games seem so 1990's ;)

The features of Live are obviously not location locked? Ie. You can buy movies that possibly haven't even come to DVD here yet from the marketplace?

No, unfortunately they nailed that one in last months dashboard update with geolocal IP blocking. They did apologise, but it's the movie studios requesting it and they have to play ball, or they don't get the content.

But have no fear local Live is coming, as is IPTV, it's just a matter of time, and I mean months, not years.

You are now obviously trolling ;)

yeah Live obviously bypasses all region restrictions and licensing and distribution issues.. That's what R70 gets you

Seriously lets try and keep this intelligent

Ok then, thanks for the replies chaps. I think I got a better understanding now although I must chew over some of the detail :)

You do realise you had a free months Live when you had your system?
Yup, when I eventually found out that I had to spoof an address - as my countless attempts at registering my real address were turned down to the point that I gave up - that when I eventually got it right (after checking the net), shortly thereafter I gave the console away. Hence my limited experience about XBL and hence the questions lol ;)

Hey doobiwan saw it as a relevant question and he seems to know more than you. Thanks doobiwan.

lol, so true... yes I have seen FX on quite a few boards and I still think he knew the answer before asking...

To clear something up, the Spring Update did place some geographic limits on Live but there where limits before that as well, we where unable to rent any movies before the Spring update as well.

To be completely honest we shouldn't be on Live at all yet, as it is not supported here. Further to that since we fall under the European distribution virtually all region locks an so forth in South Africa are based on the European standard.

The European Xbox does not currently allow you to download Movies.

But like I said I think FX knows this and was trolling. My uninformed opinion is all.

Easy guys. Gav's been in a few too many fanboy fights in the last few days, I'm guessing he's just a bit edgy. Play nice now!

yes, NOW STOP WITH THE FANBOY FIGHTS!!! it's saddening! now EVERY ps3 fanboy and EVERY box fanboy make sure you play nice! that means no attacks, no egging the other guy on! this is mybroadband, not my-console-is-better-then-yours-land!

If you want a fight, call telcom(that is with a cell phone!), or dis some ausies!

@Brawler:

Hey Brawler,

I see you from EL. Nice :)

Have you even seen a PS3 before? Well regardless, seeing as though we from the same town, how would you like to see first hand what the PS3 can do? I'll make time and give you a free demo if you want, and you can mess around with it for a bit as well.

If you interrested, just pop me a PM and include your number, and I'll buzz you and we can set something up.

Cheers :)

Lol shot dude, but its fine one of my good mates has a PS3 on a 40" Bravia and although it is impressive(must be the TV :p) certainly not worth the price seing as the 360 costs half the price & graphics just as good from what i could see.

I'm actually a neutral in this whole console war you guys got going, always preferred the PC for gaming but 'hopefully' sometime soon will get around to getting a decent TV & console which will be the 360 due to many reasons, price for 1, games for another & many more.

I still think paying for XBL Gold is a good investment for what a gamer gets. Having something for free most of the time runs the risk of being altered or taken away and crying foul wont help because it was free. ;)
