So I bought a blue ribbon white bread on Friday at Checkers. My first visit to Checkers in years. I usually buy at Pick n Pay.

Wanted to make a sandwich now and the entire bread is moulded.

I've never, ever had this problem with Pick n Pay and the same brand of bread.

Why the thread. To vent that I just threw an entire bread into the trash.
I hate wasting food. I've struggled too much in life to have that convenience.

Really pissed now

I also hate wasting food. Even the coarsey on the bread, i'll eat it if no one else does.
Fortunately, we do not struggle or worry about the next meal, but so many others do. I really feel terrible when i throw out any food.

Head back to checkers, tell them what happened, ask them to give you 2 loaves and take one home and give another to anyone needing it on your way home.

I've never had this problem and I almost only shop at Checkers. But I know the feeling. Once bought a grilled chicken from them that tasted off when we got home to eat it. Very disheartening to waste.

Phone them. They will replace next time you go back even without the slip. They are usually very good and give you the benefit during complaints even without proof of purchase.

Thanks. I'm a bit stuffed in the transport area right now, otherwise I would do so.

I'm just sticking to Pick n Pay from now on.
Not that I'm saying they don't have their own issues, I've just never had food spoil from them though.

Really frustrating.
I had a good meal today, so I'm sorted. Was just in the mood for a Marmite broodjie :p

I'm the same as you.
I would also rather put excess food in the fridge to eat later. I give it away to workers etc if I have too much though.

Thanks. I hear your sentiment.
It's a lost cause though. R50 airtime will be used for a R14 bread.

They are all the same. Last time I was at my local Pick n Pay I noticed something. It was one of those bags of ready made soup - green pea and ham. The bag was bulging - it had bubbles in the soup and was solidly inflated.
The best before date was days away. So I took it to the front counter and handed it to the manager. Told him the next time I'm posting it to Twitter first, then walked away before he could say anything

Happens everywhere from time to time. Esp now when we have had all these silly supply restrictions and sales bans.
A simple process to alert the manager in a friendly way works wonders.
Feed the birds with bread, they don't mind the mould.

Depends on the mould, yes it is not a big deal if not too bad.
But then, it must be more than 10 years ago that we have bought large brand name factory bread. Or what they call bread.

Not sure how this is Checkers fault? Did they sell you an already expired loaf on Friday? What was the expiry date on it?

Good news for the future though - just last month the Dept of Health granted approval for the use of sorbic acid as a bread preservative.

The bread passed my spidey sense hand fresh test.

I have to concede that I didn't check the expiration date. Point remains that this has never happened to me at PnP.

I'm not going through my trash to check though. I was quite high and tired when posting this thread :p

Have a good week everyone :) ;)

I am also wanting to know how this is Checkers fault and why not just return it? As far as I know every supplier packs their own product on the shelf space provided and remove product that has expired. So why is Checkers bad if you did not attempt to return the product?

Generally had much better experiences at Checkers than PnP. As others have said, also find Checkers customer service top notch and always try very hard to resolve. So test them.

Definitely understand your frustration.

Would like an explanation of how Checkers is bad because you bought stale bread though. If you bought a new Golf and it had an issue, does that then make VW bad? Or perhaps only Lindsay Saker? Perhaps Audi and Porsche too, by extension?

Perhaps you're bad because you didn't check the bread in the store?

I get it. But come on man.
