Checkers launches new rewards programme

It's not a lot, maybe R30 a month in accumulated points. The bigger saving for me though is the personalised discount on specific items I actually buy

The points expire every year. Not all at once, but every quarter (of the year) a bunch of points expire.
 
Also got my card. Some of the in-store specials looked really attractive. Some were pretty meh, as to be expected, but others are pretty much in my ballpark.

For me, it's PnP's pricing that's gone through the roof. Buy a bottle of milk for R36 at PnP, same bottle is R31 at my local Checkers. Guess where I'm stopping?

To boot, their Smart Shopper has turned into a joke. The points earned used to be 1 point for every rand spent, and 100 points was R1, so you essentially got 1% back in points. Then that changed to 1 point for every R2 spent, and now suddenly it's not worth it anymore. I still go to PnP Hyper in my area, because some of their specials are often good (like 2l Pepsi the other day for R9,99), but that's about it. Bulk gets bought from Makro, groceries from Checkers.

If you regularly shop at PnP enough to accumulate smart shopper points, then you are overpaying for most things. It's not worth it. Rather shop at Checkers. Their "regular priced" merch is usually R3 to R8 cheaper per item than PnP.

I try go to the gym everyday. And I love raw veggies like carrots and cucumber. So I might as well get all the high fat, low carb people on Discovery to subsidise my lifestyle. :ROFL:

Exactly, yeah. I generally have R20 or R30 on my PnP card at most times, since I've stopped shopping from them completely. They'll have to give a ton of points to make up those prices.

Sometimes I'll go there when certain offers are on. The other day they had R150 off R1,000 spend for the first some number of customers. On top of the other points and all that, I got a good deal. Bought mostly meats and stuff like that, and then loaded up sweets actually to get to the R1k mark so I could get R150 off.
 
We do all our grocery shopping at Checkers lately. With their prices, and eBucks Level 5, it is an absolute dream.
 
I have looked at their savings pamphlet. Its nothing to be excited about. It just seems like the regular promos that they have been giving all these years...

Disagree. There were great deals.

I saved R150 by buying R736 worth of goods.

Yup switched over about a year ago to Checkers from PnP, my shopping bill has gone down quite a bit actually from shopping at PnP. Now only use PnP if there is specials which aren't that great anymore really, so it's a mix between Checkers, the butchery down the road and Food Lovers.

This. I have a Pick n Pay about 100m down the road, but a checkers 2km down the road. Takes 5min longer in the car, but their better pricing and eBucks level 5 makes it a much sweeter deal. On the way back I also stop at a Spar who has cheaper *and* better quality meat than both. The convenience factor of getting everything in one shop is being outweighed by the crappy quality/expensive meat at Checkers and PnP.
 
Used to do all our weekly grocery shopping at PnP (as Checkers was too far). Actually had enough rewards to buy a new vacuum cleaner with it. Then we got a new Checkers and now we do all our shopping there (PnP only for emergencies). Checkers rewards card is going to be used extensively :)
 
I wanted some food and did not realise that the items was discounted for reward cards holders. I looked at the terms and conditions and am appalled. It was a moment of weakness on my part that I take responsibility for. I wish I had given a fake name, ID and contact details. Hopefully they will remove my details from my program.
