Cheese

The Woolies/Parmalat cheese is good. I also enjoy the Seriously Strong Cheddar - the extra, extra mature one. I also love their marketing too...:o :D

I also like the Seriously Strong. A little too brittle for my liking but the taste is great!

Disprove me. And remember I've lived in Devon and Lancashire.

We don't have enough farmer's markets, that's the only problem imho. We certainly have very good quality dairy, including cheeses. Yes, UK has a far greater variety and some fantastic cheeses, but we still produce a fair number of top quality cheddars - those that I've tasted are usually from farmer's markets, farmstalls or independant producers stuck in Frikkiesfonpoefadderfontein...:o

There's nothing 'wrong' with them I suppose. There's nothing 'wrong' with a r30 bottle of chardonnay either. They just don't have the same character as a lovely Lancashire crumbly....

I lived in Stilton country. :)

Have you tried buying Stilton in SA? R300 per kg was the last I saw so I've completely given up buying it, especially considering it's fairly affordable in Europe. Manchego cheese is another ridiculously priced cheese in SA. Such a pity that we're so reliant on supermarkets for our subsistence...

Oh, I see. One of those "Life is too short for cheap wine" kind of things :)

The problem with supermarkets; they all think we have the taste buds of a hillbilly and expect us to be greatful for the bits of cheddar they offer as cheese.
The best thing to do is to find a good blue and stick to it...the only thing that I have found remotely enjoyable at a reasonable price is Fairview Blue and whiterock.
Especially with a sweet chilli preserve.

I guess... I mean I still eat supermarket cheddar heh - beggars can't be choosers etc. I just know the difference. All those Parmalat cheeses are a pale imitation of their European counterparts. I'd kill for a hunk of Gruyere right about now.
