So both Lancewood and DairyBelle used to make a range called Colchester , have not seen it on the shelves in any major Supermarket chain for a while.

Anybody know if it has been discontinued ?

Bit tired of seeing shelves of Gouda and Cheddar in varying stages of maturity with the odd bit of Brie, Blue and Camembert thrown into the mix.

Checkers tends to have an extensive selection of cheeses.

Fox & Crow was my fav mature cheddar. I haven't seen it for some time. Pick n Pay usually has a decent selection in our city.
A quick google says that Dairybelle Colchester hasn't been around for some time, not sure.

I only saw the Lancewood Colchester twice and it was six months apart.

Last time spotted and bought was in December 2017. So if I'm right we'll see a batch this month.

Fox & Crow was a Clover line, disc a few years ago....

The Only Colchester I see on my online Soc is the imported stuff from the UK.

With the value of the Rand over the last few years the price of the imported cheese has been put beyond the reach of most folk.....

For what it's worth, there are some excellent local cheeses....

For hard cheese, I agree.

When you go to mozzarella, Brie, Camembert, Stilton/roquefort, gorgonzola, not one local cheese is edible.

Thank you , glad to know i am not the only one to find them rather bland in flavour, lacking both 'body' and 'odour'.

I hoped when President bought Simonsberg that they would put more aged and less plasticky cheeses.

I was wrong, they tried for a few week in some selected Pnp (actually in the areas where the french expats mostly live) and it didn’t sell at all so they stopped.

I was arguing recently with a few well traveled South Africans who were telling me that Fairview Brie and Camembert are amazing and the same than french ones. I was speechless...

I guess we’re doomed by the ignorance of the market.

Lancewood always tastes like plastic as well, which is a lot different from Parmalat or Clover, or even Pick 'n Pay brand.

Why does it taste like that - what do they add to their cheese that is different?

In S.A. we are just doomed by ignorance full stop. :(

Good cheese is so expensive in South Africa, it makes me really depressed.

Actually not that much. It costs the same in Europe.

The only difference is that the average salary is way lower here than in Europe.

Not cheap, have you tried Klein Rivier Cheese yet. Still the nicest cheese I have tasted by far, unlike this plastic crap they sell in the shop.

yeah, what is up with these bright yellow and orange cheeses we have in the shops? Who thought that this was a selling point?
And what is up with that rubber like cheese everyone sells?
We have a big dairy industry, surely we can knock out some decent bloody cheese that does not cost the earth.
