Cheetahs Supporters Thread

I feel for the cheetahs as they lose a lot of talent to the "bigger" unions.

BUT

In the last 5-8 years they have grown financially and players wise.

I think the cheetahs will continue growing and going from strength to strength.

Good to see that we have not lost too many players. Only JLP, Fabian Juries and Richardt Strauss.

Will have to wait for next week to see if Brussow is going or staying.

My view on our chances:

Depth is the main reason I believe we will have a better S14 next year. We lost many many players last season and the season before that. IIRC the numbers were 9 for last season and 17 for the season before that. To rebuild a team from that is almost impossible. That means new players for almost each position. Experience, knowing your partner, etc has a major influence on the performance of the team.
The Griquas also had a great Currie Cup season and were unlucky to loose out of a semi-spot by 1 point in the end. All their players will be fired up to show they were not lucky and they have the talent and heart to play with the big boys.

We also have a better draw next year, playing our first 6 games at home(in South Africa) and only 4 weeks abroad. If we can win 5 out of the first 6 games we will take a lot of confidence into the tour and coming away with 1 or 2 wins will put us in a really good position for the last few rounds.

I am not saying the Cheetahs will get to the semi's but I am sure we will be more competitive than ever.
If we can play 80 minutes of rugby instead of 60 like we did in the Currie Cup and not get behind 24-0 in the first 20 minutes, we will never be wooden spoon contenders next year.

My 2c.

Brussow stays at Cheetahs.

Press release from Cheetahs website:

Mnr.

thought as much, that article in the Daily News held no concrete evidence that he was going to join the Sharks.

Sharks pivot Monty Dumond has signed a loan deal with the Cheetahs for the Super 14 campaign next season.

The Cheetahs and the Sharks have agreed a temporary transfer, which sees Dumond join the Bloemfontein union and Free State U21 flank Johan Wessels head to Durban. The two players will return to their respective unions once the Currie Cup starts.

Cheetahs backline coach Hawies Fourie says they are happy with their signing and believes Dumond’s form can boost the squad as they prepare for the Super 14.

‘He had a great season with the Sharks, but he was unfortunate to have lost his place when they contracted Juan Hernandez,’ Fourie told keo.co.za.

‘But Monty has played and kicked well when given the opportunity. He’s definitely in his best form this season and he will take that confidence into the Super 14.’

Dumond wants to get Super 14 experience, but Fourie said the flyhalf will have to fight for a place in the team.

‘He wants to play Super 14, but he has to compete with Naas Olivier and Louis Strydom for a place in the match 22,’ he said. ‘It’s good for us to have a player of his quality in the squad and to have that depth in the flyhalf position, especially after losing Jacques-Louis Potgieter to the Bulls.’

Meanwhile, according to the Rapport, the Sharks were willing to pay R2 million to buy Heinrich Brüssow out of his contract with the Cheetahs. However, president Harold Verster confirmed with this website that the Springbok will commit to the union until the end of 2010.

So they take the next Brussow. I have very high hopes for Wessels.
Watched the u/21 game on Saturday and also a few games at the beginning of the season he played for the Cheetahs. Plays the exact same game as Brussow. Turned over many a ball at ruck time and makes some massive hits on defense.

Edit: I think Hawies can make Dumond a quality fly-half. Here is for hoping he will kick better than Potties.

And it's not that far away. :)

12 February. Cheetahs vs Bulls in Bloemfontein.

Can't wait.

Just confirmed that the Cheetahs have signed Skipper Badenhorst from the Sharks on a 2 year deal.
He will however have to compete for his place against Adriaan Strauss and Rayno Barnes.

Now we only need some a new lock signing and we are well on our way to being a balanced side with great depth.

After his exclusion from the Bok squad for the end of year tour, it has been confirmed that the Cheetah loosehead, Wian du Preez is on his way to play for Irish club Munster.

It is only a 2 month loan deal agreed upon by the Cheetahs and an injury stricken Munster. He will return on 25 January 2010 to join up with the Cheetah S14 squad.

Adriaan Strauss and Wian du Preez are both on their way to England to replace the injured duo Chiliboy Ralepele and Gurthro Steenkamp after both got injured during the Springboks 22-17 loss to Leicester on Friday night.

Good to see them not being replaced by kwota players.

Indeed. Like I have said in another thread. I would love to see what Chiliboy is capable of achieving when he is 100% fit and had some decent game-time. But unfortunately he is very prone to injuries and not our second or even third best hooker in SA.
So I am very happy for Strauss. He really worked hard this year(that goes for the entire FS pack) and he has the leadership skills to keep the players motivated and disciplined during the game.

Scrumming next to Wian will also be a big bonus as they know each other's game very well. Will be interesting to see if CJ gets immediate game-time against Saracens or even France on Friday.

WP Nel picked for BaaBaas

Source: Rugby-talk

I am very happy for him.
Maybe not the most ideal chance or time to show what he is capable of.

WP Nel, the Cheetahs prop has been named in the Barbarians squad to play the All Blacks at Twickenham on 5 December 2009.

Nel was widely tipped to earn a Springbok call up for the End of Year Tour but, after missing out on that selection, will be the Barbarians’ uncapped representative at the home of English rugby next Saturday.

A powerful scrummager and a willing runner, the 23 year-old will be looking forward to rubbing shoulders with some of the world’s biggest names and performing on one of the games grandest stages.

All in all, 10 South Africans have been included in a squad of 22 players, 4 backs and 6 forwards.

The Barbarians squad will be:

Backs: Leigh Halfpenny (Wales), Bryan Habana (South Africa), Joe Rokocoko (New Zealand), Drew Mitchell (Australia), Jamie Roberts (Wales), Jaque Fourie (South Africa), Morne Steyn (South Africa), Matt Giteau (Australia), Fourie du Preez (South Africa), Will Genia (Australia)

Forwards: Bismarck du Plessis (South Africa), Stephen Moore (Australia), Tendai Mtawarira (South Africa), W P Nel (Free State Cheetahs), Salvatore Perugini (Italy), Victor Matfield (South Africa), Danie Rossouw (South Africa), Carlo del Fava (Italy), Rocky Elsom (Australia), Schalk Burger (South Africa), George Smith (Australia), Andy Powell (Wales).

Rumor has it that the loan agreement between the Sharks and Cheetahs for Monty Dumond and Johan Wessels has been put on hold until further notice.

Apparently Plumtree is having doubts about Ruan Pienaar or at least doubts about where he will be playing next year. Thus he is holding on to Monty until he had a talk with Ruan.

Cheetahs to play Southern Kings in a Super 14 warm-up match in Port Elizabeth on 30 January 2010.

I am waiting to see what side the Kings can put together. It will be nothing like the game against the B&I Lions where players from all the other unions helped them out.
De Wet Barry will most likely captain the side.

You mean mostly blue bulls/vodacom bulls players.

The only reason for that was because the Bulls didn't get a game against the B&I Lions.

Bloemfontein – Former Springbok and Free State lock Barend Pieterse is set to make a comeback after more than a year out of the game.

Pieterse, 30, who called an end to his career at the end of 2008, is planning an official comeback in the Currie Cup. However, if everything goes well, he may well be involved in the latter stages of the Super14.

Pieterse says that he has never stopped training and has been involved in the game since his retirement.

He trained with the Cheetahs on Wednesday, and worked as the their lineout coach last year.

“I believe I still have rugby left in me,” said Pieterse.

The 1.96m lock does not want to put himself under unnecessary pressure and is therefore only eyeing the Currie Cup. He will give his all and take things as they come.

“If it works, it works. If not, I won’t be down and out,” he said.

Pieterse played for the Free State from 2004 until 2008, and was involved in the teams that won the Currie Cup.

He did not represent South Africa in a Test, but was in the 2007 tour squad to Europe and wore the Green and Gold against the Barbarians at Twickenham.

That is why Cheetahs coach Naka Drotské will be delighted with Pieterse’s decision. He does not only provide more depth at lock, but his experience may be invaluable.

“It will be nice to be able to replicate the success of last year’s team,” said Pieterse.

Very good player. Great experience. But is it a good move?
I know we are a bit thin on locks but Pieterse was injury prone with his ankle during his last season.
If only we could get someone like Wilhelm Steenkamp from the Bulls.

Juan Smith confirmed captain of the Cheeaths.

I'm not completely happy with the decision but very happy that he is back.

I'm not going to type everything again so here is my post from Keo.

I think Strauss should have retained the captaincy.
Don’t get me wrong. Juan is the best in his position by far and he demands respect because of his play. I absolutely love this guy.
BUT…
He is not that great a captain. In the 2009 Super14(and a few other times), when a lot of fringe calls went against the Cheetahs(all the games we lost in final minutes or by a few points), you could clearly see Juan getting upset with the referee. This also impacted on his game and he lost focus for the final minutes of the game. Instead of concentrating on winning the game he was standing around rucks trying to point out to the referee what the other team was doing wrong.

IMO He also plays a lot better for the Boks than for the Cheetahs. mainly because he can concentrate on his game only. No burden of captaincy.
Strauss did brilliantly in the CC to turn around a shocking start.
juan will however bring back that extra dimension for the Cheetahs. Best loosies combo in South Africa.
