Chef seeks other opportunities

The language thing that the peeps are talking about can be a good idea, maybe not permanent but a way out until you find something else.

I think you're missing my point. If I teach you Italian, how can you practice and learn more.? You would learn better if you were in Rome don't you think?

You can't learn local dialect from an audio book.

1. Yes, it would be better. We don't live in a better world, we live in the real one where we make do with what we have.

2. No you can't, and who wants to? Usually people want to learn the standard form of the language. And audio books are not a good way of learning a language, teachers are.

If someone is interested in learning a language, they will make it their mission to be exposed to it. Watch films, read books etc. And even if they never become fluent in it, who cares? As long as they pay you for your time, you're fine.

I like big reveals. Lol
8k with a few benefits thrown in for good measure. My work week is going to be around 72 hours. That's 12 hours a day for 6 days.

well that's a bit shyte.

my cousin started his own corporate catering thing recently. seems to be doing good. is your employer taking advantage of you?

Don't they all. In my industry it's hard to say no.

Very good points of discussion.

I was wondering how you could have remained so long in the industry and still earn so little, but your posts and others' posts helped me understand.

When you say you work 12 hours a day, does that mean morning to early evening or perhaps lunch time to midnight?
Another intrusive question, how much money do you have left per month ? (that can help with people advising you what to spend it on like courses etc.)

It's the passion of the industry that drives you. You work when people need to eat. So that's why you work your ass off.

I'm looking into corporate catering at the moment. I'll see how it goes. Have a meeting in an hour.

You could also look at getting front of house work at a hotel, especially if you can speak different languages. Otherwise be all cheffy on a private yacht in the caribbean - it's probably more relaxed than a chef at a restaurant.

I travelled the world in my younger days. I only go for holidays now. My heart is in cape town.

You could always try Food Retail, but like the buying side. If your product knowledge of food is good ( I assume it is because youre a chef) and you can speak foreign languages you could give it a go.

In cape town you need to know someone on the inside....
