Local soccer is definitely improving. The level may still not be as high as it should be but there are definately improvements. I really enjoyed last seasons PSL campaign even though my team lost the title on the last day.
The PSL is HUGE in Africa, it's the most lucrative league on the continent(some players picking up R200 000 p/m) and there are teams who do pull in spectators, teams like Sundowns, Bloem Celtic, Chiefs and Pirates to name a few and have you been to Athlone stadium when its the Cape Town derby?
Which Chiefs striker are you referring to? Torealba?

The sad part is that Most fans(not just man fans) don't. Eagles is one of their most highly rated reserve team players, as is Cambell.

The british newspapers were quite impressed with K Chiefs' showing since Man U actually fielded a strong team. The mere fact that Chiefs held them to a 1-1 draw is quite impressive regardless of the status of the match. Nobody is suggesting Chiefs is better than Man U but at the same time a LOT of people assumed it would have been a 5-0 win for Man U, which it wasn't. I think next time people will wait before simply shooting down the local teams.
The funniest bit to me is how all the Man U supporters suddenly come up with the usual excuses instead of accepting that they didn't win the match as was expected.

Dude, there are yongsters like Eagles and Campbell who are barely on the fringes of the team and then there are the laaities that came on in the 2nd half, that aren't.
Also, I agree that a lot of South Africans don't follow local football because it is rubbish, not because it is black. Come on.
No im saying that you can rest assured that avoiding any injuries was a higher priority than actually winning the game..
Football is as much a psychological sport as it is a physical one, for Chiefs players it was a once in a life time opportunity to play against some of the best in the world, for United its nothing more than just a part of their pre season fitness routine

The game was not great but it was great seeing the players in person for once and the vibe was great. The stadium was pretty packed, too.

Yip, excuses excuses. You know what the best way is to avoid injury? Don't play. What benefit do you derive from not playing 100%? It is surely not for financial gain that Man U come to play in Africa. If it is merely to get fit then just round around the field ten times. Dribble past traffic cones. These are all a lot less dangerous!
Again I will use the rugby analogy. SA are the world champions. For most teams who play us it is a once in a lifetime opportunity to beat the world champions. Do you think any of us would accept them losing or even drawing with lowly teams we play for this reason? I think not. Not even in a pre season friendly. Look at the games we just played against Wales and Argentina, by no means lowly teams, and the team was grilled for not whipping them more comprehensively. Your team played ****e! Just admit it!
Let's hope for your sake they lift their levels for the game against Pirates! I for one will be screaming up the Bucs all the way!!

Besides as an arsenal fan, a team who regularly plays Man U in the league, it would be in his best interests to sing the praises of a fellow league opposition team. If the best team in the prem league only manages a draw against Chiefs it does not say much for the teams lower than them! This is the reason for his defence!

I have not once praised it so highly as you state. I have, however, praised the result by Chiefs, in holding Man U to a draw, repeatedly in this thread. You are more than likely fully aware of the fact that I have stated elsewhere that I am more of a rugby and cricket person myself. I do, however, catch every game I can when South Africa is playing or instances like this where a local team plays a foreign team. In these cases I will always be rooting for the local team. It gives me a reason to support them rather than just to pick a team that is doing well to support!
The same applies when South Africa plays hockey, tennis... even golf, which I am not a big fan of, but I have been watching the British Open to see how Retief, Ernie and the other South Africans do (not too well unfortunately!). I will not make claims that our tennis players are the best but I surely won't support Federer if he is competing against a South African. Why would I? I have no problems shouting for him when he is playing Nadal in the final though!

Why would I? My allegiance for a team stems from the place of my birth! When I lived in Joburg for a number of years I still supported the Sharks, even when they had not won anything in 100 years, as this was the place of my birth. If the Bulls play an Aussie team, even though I hate the Bulls, they will get my support, as long as the result does not affect the Sharks fortunes, as they are a South African team! Can't see why this confuses you, it makes total sense to me
