This was covered above. And I do not think I am the only person in the world. In fact I think this may be pretty common practice really. It is only you soccer fans (sorry football fans as soccer fans tend to be less so) who seem to be fickle! :)

My only teams of choice -

Rugby - Springboks and the Sharks
Cricket - Proteas and Dolphins

Soccer I am not a fan of but I will watch Bafana play and then as stated if it is a friendly with an international team I will support the SA team. I will also try to watch Pirates play Man U on Tuesday if I can get a ticket. Not life or death if I don't go though as the game of soccer really does bore me! Too much acting! And the better the team the more they act it seems!

In other sports I am not interested at provincial level so my allegiance there is purely based on being South African. If the hockey team is in the Olympics they will have me shouting for them even if they are up against the favourites... in fact more so as I have a particular rivalry I have developed with any Aussie teams (suppose living with a bunch of them for three years in the UK developed this!). In fact even when the SA polo team takes on foreign teams I always hope they win even if I do not get to see the game itself. It is nice to hear your country won!

Again I will use the rugby analogy. SA are the world champions. For most teams who play us it is a once in a lifetime opportunity to beat the world champions. Do you think any of us would accept them losing or even drawing with lowly teams we play for this reason? I think not. Not even in a pre season friendly. Look at the games we just played against Wales and Argentina, by no means lowly teams, and the team was grilled for not whipping them more comprehensively. Your team played ****e! Just admit it!

Let's hope for your sake they lift their levels for the game against Pirates! I for one will be screaming up the Bucs all the way!!

K lets just put it in simple terms... If/when United win the Vodacom challenge, you're not going to find it listed as 1 of their achievements in their wikipedia entry

Well that is the sort of disrespect I would expect.... nothing unusual for football really... play to lose... diving... arguing with the ref... great sport really!

It has nothing to do with respect or lack thereof. This VC 'Trophy' is just a summer warm-up for United. Much like when they went out and beat Malaysia and Singapore 8-0 and the likes, no one was overly excited. It is more for the team to get in some match practise and for fans who would normally never see United play, get a chance to.

Ha ha so this result was a shocker then!!! That has been our point! Or in those games did they decide to play 100% even though it was a warm up? :)

Dude, what are you not getting here? Last year, in the same 'tournament' we also drew with Chiefs and even went on to LOSE the final on penalties. And still no one cared. It is a warm-up for heaven's sake.

You seem to be battling to comprehend what I have said in two posts now. I watch soccer when SA play or in instances like this where an SA club plays foreign teams. Comprehende? Sorry, I did not realise you need to be a card, scarf, cap, replica shirt carrying fan before you can comment.

And by the way I am actually in the "new posts" section of a forum specialising in internet related matters. I do not specifically browse sub sections. If you feel you would only like certain types in your forum then I suggest a post in the gripes/suggestions section requesting that this sub forum be removed from "new posts" ;)

Dude, you are the one who said it was a meaningless warm up game. You are the one who said 1-1 is not bad in these matches as it means nothing. You are the one who said that in similar warm up games Man U beat Malaysia and Singapore 8-0.

I am the one who therefore concludes that they usually do put their full effort into these matches. And I am the one who concludes that they would not be happy with a 1-1 draw.

It would have been wonderful if we could have a parallel universe in which Man U beat Chiefs 8-0 and then see how you guys would have been bleating about the result then. You do know you are setting yourselves up to not be able to say anything if you beat Pirates by this many on Tuesday?

LOL, that would have been the case if you hadn;t come in here and bleated on for two days now. If United stuff Pirates 5-0 you will be hearing about it for sure. It still won't mean anything, but you will be hearing about it :)

Ditto when Man U lose!!! :)

EDIT : By the way 5-0 would not really be that good as we are a 3rd world country and our football sucks! ;) Surely 10-0 should be the minimum before you can brag. They did after all beat Singapore 8-0!

its a tour, they have a prem title and champs if they need to brag

Before the game, they brought out the PL and EPL trophies for all to see. To a standing ovation no less :)

I was raised in a football and rugby household. I grew up with my dad playing football and rugby, my grandfather when he was alive and younger too. I've seen local and international matches, from little matches near the Habitat for Humanity projects in Masipumelelo to larger matches.

No I don't support local football. Am I meant to apologize because its generally low quality? Have I been to PSL matches? yes. Have you?

Yes I've been to Athlone stadium and the crowds Ajax started to get were great but without SAFA or SAFA WP behind them marketing the sport,the venue and the team and keeping it going, its simply not gonna happen if Ajax move towards the bottom of the log.(or even if they remain in the top 5).

Only larger chiefs or pirates or sundowns type matches etc. draw great crowds. How many of those do we see each year? 6 or 7?

I really hope for all the best for the PSL and would love great crowds at Athlone where every seat is filled for a PSL match BUT its going to take a lot of hard work from all spheres to get more spectators in seats across the country.

Um, people usually stand when a team comes on a field or parade around it.... I would not call it a standing ovation!! Ha ha

You could stay seated but then you would not see anything due to the person in front of you standing! ;)
 
Phew what an interesting thread :q

Just my input: we as South Africans should support more of our local teams, no matter how bad (and also unless you absolutley support the rival team, in this case ManU)

But ALSO, I do think ManU didnt play "properly". They didnt give out their best shot you know?
