I think that is actually really telling. China is not really that interested in the territory, but they see Taiwan as an area of strategic interest. They do not want to see Taiwan selling themselves to others.

The Chinese are sensitive about Taiwan, they see Pelosi as a sign that the US is moving to diplomatic recognition, while in the west she is rightfully seen as a poser. China sees Taiwan as part of its sphere of influence and its territory. Now trying to communicate spheres of influences on the Russian/Ukraine thread has been impossible to an audience that doesn't want to acknowledge that America has one, and effectively expanded the Monroe Doctrine after the collapse of the cold war.

I am wondering how South Africa or the British for the matter is going to react given that the Chinese has plans in motion for a Naval Base in Namibia.

As much as at heart I side with an independent Taiwan its a complex situation. If Alaska decided to become an independently run communist enclave and then started buddying up with China the US would not accept that either. The rule applied to one has to apply to all. Honestly right now the best outcome is maintaining the status quo as has been done for the last 6/7 decades.

Pieces of your own country are strategic interests.
And national ones.
The west needs to be more isolationist.
Guess we gotta wait for Trump 2024.

While the white paper reiterated China’s preference for peaceful unification, it also said Beijing wouldn’t rule out the use of force if “external forces” and “separatist elements” move the island too close to independence. China has repeatedly made clear to the US that Taiwan is a red line and that Washington’s support for “independence forces” could lead to war.

The United States Government of President Joseph Biden is taking additional military precautions in case China decides to retaliate after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi went ahead with her plans to visit Taiwan.

The US Navy has the USS Ronald Reagan and her Carrier Strike conducting “routine operations in the South China Sea and Philippine Sea” alongside the amphibious ship USS Tripoli, according to a Pacific Fleet spokeswoman quoted by EFE.

As the relationship between China and the US becomes increasingly unpredictable, Taiwan has become by far the most dangerous source of tension and conflict.

The armada includes the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan, the destroyer USS Higgins and the guided missile cruisers USS Antietam and USS Chancellorsville “on a summer patrol deployment,” while the USS Tripoli is conducting “routine operations” in the Philippine Sea.

According to the USNI News Fleet and Marine Tracker, the USS America is en route to waters near Taiwan, but is still in the port of Sasebo in Japan.

Although Washington does not recognize Taiwan as an independent state, it has sustainedly provided the island with the means to defend itself.
Meanwhile, Pelosi explained in an editorial published by the Washington Post the rationale behind her journey. She first claimed “the trip doesn’t signal a change in US posture toward the island and urging Beijing to refrain from an aggressive response.”

During multiple business trips to China that one country two systems was preached as gospel by the locals I worked with.

Mao had no compunction about killing off 80 million in his cultural revolution and, after Hong Kong, the Taiwan leadership would be fools to think that Xi Jinping might behave differently.
Chances are good that China has monitored every anti communist comment on all social media and the offenders would immediately be swept up for liquidation or later use as organ donors.
 
I believe Joe and Xi are scheduled for a chat shortly.
The US has previously said it supports the One China story - but I believe it wants the status quo t remain.

This is like a soapy - waiting for the next episode.
