China - Taiwan Developments

Gold and silver prices are solidly lower in midday U.S. trading Monday, on demand concerns for the metals after a batch of weak economic data from China. Sharply lower crude oil prices and a stronger U.S. dollar index to start the trading week are also bearish daily forces working against the metals. October gold futures were last down $19.60 at $1,785.70. September Comex silver futures were last down $0.443 at $20.26 an ounce.China's central bank this week unexpectedly announced it is lowering interest rates and adding liquidity to China's financial system after some dour economic data reported for the world's second-largest economy. Chinese data on factory output, investment, consumer spending and real estate all weakened in July. The dour China news added to fears of a global economic recession. Covid restrictions and a troubled property market have helped to hobble China's economy in recent months. Other raw commodity prices on Monday also took a hit on the China news, led by a big drop in crude oil prices. China is a major global consumer of raw commodities, including metals. A weakening Chinese economy suggests less demand for raw commodities.

Could China afford to go to war now?
 
BEIJING, August 17. /TASS/. China does not have a clear timetable for Taiwan's reunification, but under the influence of external factors, this process can be accelerated, China’s Ambassador to Norway, Yi Xianliang, said in an interview with NRK TV broadcaster, published by the Chinese embassy on Tuesday.

"We have never had a timetable for this. But we cannot afford to let the current situation last forever. If the Americans, outside forces and separatists on the island take more provocative actions, the reunification time will shorten, [and it will happen] not in 2049 (the 100th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China - TASS), but maybe even tomorrow," Yi said.

I take it you've never been to Taiwan before. Visit the western seaboard for a bit and you will see it's pretty flat with vast areas of farmland. Just a rough guess, but I doubt China will try to go all the way around to land their forces on the Eastern seaboard.

I don't know about their logistics. Just mentioning that the eastern seaboard of Taiwan is decent terrain for fast-moving tanks. It's part of the reason Taiwan has most of their tank battalions stationed in that area.

I'm talking about chinese tanks. There are only very few landing spots on the coast line afaik and they are all very well fortified.

That's true, it was almost impossible to find a beach without old anti-vehicle spikes and concrete obstructions. I did a long bike trip along the coastal roads down the seaboard. The only places you didn't really find the obstructions were in wetland reserves and along a few bathing/crabbing beaches.
