Chiropractor breaks baby's neck

There are many reasons why a person would go to a Chiropractor or Physiotherapist.
Not all of them have to do with superstition or mysticism.

Erm, it was a joke on the "walk" part of your statement: "If you walk...". You know, able to walk so why visit a disabler?

Should've added a smiley of some sort I suppose.

Few years back I had a pinched nerve in my back and was referred to a chiropractor. He was awesome. Had x-rays done of my spine ect. Very professional. Sorted out my pain in 2 sessions. That was about 12 years ago. I have just developed the same issue again and will be going back to him this week (since I see he is still going strong).

and that's the thing, if he fixes it, he is worth the money

And if he doesn't, he still has your money and will be sure to schedule as many visits as he needs.

Same can be said for ANY medical professional...

The chiropractor determined a pinched nerve from xrays?

Looking for the root of the issue. Turns out since my one leg is fractionally sorter than the other my spine is irregular i.e. has grown skew as a result of trying to compensate for the slight limp. Because of this I'm not supposed to do certain exercises in gym. But, alas I have not listened and I'm back in the same boat :p

See this is exactly why they're a bunch of money grabbing con artists for the most part. You cannot see a pinched nerve on an X-ray. The only thing you might see is bone on bone and you can assume that there might be a pinched nerve there. You cannot diagnose it though in terms of the requirements for a proper medical diagnosis. And if it is bone on bone, he'd be a complete prat not to send you for a referral to a spinal surgeon.

And it's no surprise that you were healed. Nearly all pinched nerves heal themselves with rest. And if you took analgesics it would heal even quicker on its own. You'll notice that chiropractors never fix you on the spot. They'll relieve some pain, yes, because stretching the joints will relieve pressure, but you can do that at home. But it's the follow ups that supposedly work, because... tada, it's the rest and medicine in between that helps. It's also insanely dangerous to have your back manipulated if bone is touching bone (which is the only way for him to make a pseudo-diagnosis from an X-ray) and it could cause massive problems later down the line.

These kinds of quacks make me sick. For all you know it's a spasm and not a pinched nerve. Considering it's recurring, that's in all likelihood what it is, in fact. Physio and rest might help. But spinal manipulation is just dangerous...

Sounds like you were taken for a ride to be honest

See my previous post. He went to the trouble of looking for the source of the issue. When I saw the x-rays of my spine it suddenly explained a lot.

That's not a diagnosis. That's assumption, based on assumption, based on assumption. And it's one of their favourite arguments that one leg is shorter than the other. They even use classic con artist techniques to prove it by manipulating the position of your feet to show you. It is entirely normal for legs to be different lengths. It really is. And guess how leg asymmetry is treated? With a heal lift in your shoes.

Bottom line here is that you saw one of the worst kind of quacks there is. He's used every con in the book and you've bought it. These kind of people know that they're full of schit...

I went from literally almost not being able to drive a car due to the most severe leg pain to no pain at all in less than a week after some back manipulation on the tablet. So I will swear by my chiro no matter what you say ;)

'Course you will.

"One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we’ve been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We’re no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It’s simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we’ve been taken. Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back." - Carl Sagan

It explains nothing. Few people on this planet have perfect spines, which is why back problems are so common as we get older. This is typically caused by poor posture, poor sleeping habits, laziness etc. One leg being marginally shorter than the other is not the way anyone could possibly diagnose it. That's called quackery. Funny how the blame is apportioned to the one variable that will keep you going back to the chiropractor. Funny how he diagnosed a pinched nerve from an X-ray. Funny how an X-ray was even ordered in the first place. Funny how your issue is recurring. Funny how he blames it on something he can't possibly know. Funny how he uses the asymmetric leg argument when it's entirely normal and commonplace.

Eventually you have to sit back and question whether in fact there may be better treatment options that don't involved thousands of Rands, for an issue that's typically addressed with rest, pain killers and an analgesic...

The practice of Chiropractic is based on sound scientific principles. The most recent study, called the BEAM trial, recently published in the British Medical Journal (Nov 19, 2004: 1-8), found that Chiropractic treatment produces superior results in terms of SAFETY, EFFECTIVENESS, COST EFFECTIVENESS and PATIENT SATISFACTION. Through Chiropractic care, patients are shown to take fewer days sick leave, spend less time incapacitated, use less medication for pain relief, have less chance of needing back surgery and have less chance of the problem becoming a chronic condition.

As with any medical intervention Chiropractic does have a set of risks. Fortunately these risks are very rare. Complications from genuine Chiropractic manipulation of the neck are, at worst, 1 in 500000 or 0.0002% this is significantly lower than the risk of serious side effects from ant-inflammatory drugs or even being hit in your home by a crashing plane!

so basically, the same dangers as vaccinations :p
