After catching me slathering a mountainous glob of butter on my baked potato the missus insisted that I get my cholesterol tested - should I be doing this regularly?

Every so often yes, especially if there's a history of heart problems/and/or high blood pressure in your family.

I get mine tested once a year with my sugar (I'm susceptable to diabetes/heart/highblood pressure)

My sugar levels last year was leaning towards diabetes but still in "acceptable" levels, so I stopped drinking any form of sugar. Sometimes have a bar of chocolate or pudding but yea.

If unchecked your cholestorol can cause hardened or narrowed arteries. But normally its not a problem, not with butter anyway I think. All depends on your intake of salt as well.

1 a year if you are over 40 they say. Once every 5 years before that.

Discovery like you to check it every 12 months.

Go for tests regularly.

Also, were you using BUTTER (instead of margarine)? If so, try Flora ProActiv Margarine. Clinically proven to lower cholesterol.

No, I am not getting paid to post this :)

Thanks everyone. My level was fine (as was my blood pressure - even though the machine at the gym claimed otherwise) so its all good.

Thanks but I only really have butter on baked potatoes and tbh I'd sooner go without than eat the fake stuff.

Those machines are easily misled - they work acoustically, to hear when your pulse starts again, and any loud noises nearby can throw them off.

Yeah, the sister at clicks who did the test said something along those lines.

I can't believe you just recommended that evil plastic over butter.

Aaaah Margarine the closest thing you can eat to Varnish, no thanks will stick to my butter thanks.

I used to work at a place that had drinks and snacks every Friday. Over the weekend the leftovers would just stand in the bar until the Monday morning when the cleaning staff arrived. I was usually one of the first there on the Monday and the only thing that the rats (yes every corporate building has rats) would not eat was the marge.

I understand that the pharmacy tests are especially bad for cholesterol testing because it can be drastically altered based on what you have or have not eaten before the test. Anyone know about this? Labs tests require a 12 hour fast before the test.

I had mine tested at Clicks a few months back, and they told me to fast for 6+ hours before the test.

A blood test is the only true test for cholesterol and Clicks can't do it.

Of course they can do it. Clicks pharmacy (and other mobile health labs) use the fingerprick cholesterol test - yes, it just gives one overall figure whereas a proper lab test gives LDL and HDL levels, but it's still a basic screening test to show whether or not you need to start worrying about your cholesterol.

What the hell for? so you can paint your food with
I Can't Believe It's Not Butter!® Spray ?

They'll have to prise slabs of real butter from my cold dead fingers.
No - so they can get to work on my butter encased coffin of course. ;)

And then just pray that the cancer doesn't get you before the cholesterol does.

Could you please explain this in more detail. Surely heartrate is measured acoustically not bloodpressure? Or am I missing something here?

I don't know all the right terms, so this might be a bit confused. But basically, to meaure blood pressure they listen to your pulse - they measure the pressure at which it stops, and then the pressure when it starts again (when they slacken the pressure off).

Instead of a fingerprick test, rather go for a thorough test. I'm sure that your GP will also agree.
