So after being poisoned by a Shwarma, I have found out that I have high cholesterol :(
Total Cholesterol 6.2
LGL - 2.1
HGL - 4.1 :(

I have to get the HGL to below 2.5 and the total to below 5.

So everyone is telling me to cut out everything I love. Biltong, eggs, red meat.
Eggs are supposed to be a huge no no. but I seem to have read somewhere that its a misconception? Can anyone clarify?
And I'm supposed to get more exercise, :wtf: ITS WINTER! I hibernate in winter.
:( suppose I will forgo the cart and get a caddy instead on Sunday...

There are several opinions on eggs and cholesterol, and in general eggs seems to be high in cholesterol. Egg whites are excluded though, the yolk is the guilty party. Take it easy chap unless you want the five fresh fruit and vegetables speech....

"The great tragedy of Science-the slaying of a beautiful hypothesis by an ugly fact."

For decades, enormous human and financial resources have been wasted on the cholesterol campaign, more promising research areas have been neglected, producers and manufacturers of animal food all over the world have suffered economically, and millions of healthy people have been frightened and badgered into eating a tedious and flavorless diet or into taking potentially dangerous drugs for the rest of their lives. As the scientific evidence in support of the cholesterol campaign is non-existent, we consider it important to stop it as soon as possible.

The International Network of Cholesterol Skeptics (THINCS) is a steadily growing group of scientists, physicians, other academicians and science writers from various countries. Members of this group represent different views about the causation of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease, some of them are in conflict with others, but this is a normal part of science. What we all oppose is that animal fat and high cholesterol play a role. The aim with this website is to inform our colleagues and the public that this idea is not supported by scientific evidence; in fact, for many years a huge number of scientific studies have directly contradicted it.

Give the eggs a miss. Opinion is split on them, but you're in no position to gamble. Red meant: Decrease quantity, increase quality. Exercise: Jogging preferably. Endurance style exercise is preferable to short bursts of intense exercise.

Oh, and seafood is now officially your main source of protein. As a general rule sea based protein is safe from a cholesterol angle. Do keep in mind though that if you are predisposed to gout then shellfish will put the fear of god into you. ;)

Good luck & don't take chances with this.

Do the quacks say u can eat eggs and sit on your arse the whole day?

There seems to be some question as to whether high cholesterol foods cause any long-term increase in your body's cholesterol level. Might turn out to be like the avoid eating fat to avoid gaining weight myth.

While I can believe that this has been hyped up, there must be some truth in it somewhere. Not eating high cholesterol foods DOES lead to lower levels of cholesterol in your blood.

Bleh, so I had an apple, a banana, a pear and a narchie for lunch. It was kark.
I want my pap an stew!
I need some low cholesterol recipes for lunch. That said tho, making lunch for myself everyday probably aint going to happen:(

Seriosuly, moar excercise.
As you age, you will need to eat a lot less or remain active to consume the energy you're putting into your body, as your body is no longer consuming energy usually used for growing.

Yes, avoid 4 pizza's a month (Yes - cheeze is a killer), have 1 pizza every 2 months instead, and relish the experience.

Eggs and meat are one of those foods that you eat when you are going to use the massive amounts of energy they contain.

Thing is, you can feel it, when you eat something that you did not need, you feel bloated or just yucky.
Pay attention to what your body says.

And, get exercise.
And, test your cholesterol once a month, keep an eye on it.

Eggs are fine!

Dieticians’ have been saying that one can eat an egg a day and it won’t have an effect on cholesterol. This was proved by research which was conducted over a 30-year period, the study showed that there was no link between eating eggs and the increased risk of heart disease or a rise in cholesterol.

Does it though? What they were talking about is that the high cholesterol food might lead to a spike in blood cholesterol, which is no big deal, but would not lead a generally raised level unless there is something wrong with your body's functioning or your diet is completely out of whack (e.g. your diet consists of bacon with pork sausages on the side).

Prawns and other shellfish are high in cholesterol!

An important point to consider though :

Saturated fats (fats from animals) cause our bodies to make more cholesterol. Our bodies make about 85-99% of the cholesterol in our blood and cholesterol that we eat, called 'dietary cholesterol', is responsible for about 1-15%.

couldn't believe it when i saw this thread!

i too had a routine check yesterday and received the shocking news that my cholesterol count was 8.6 :wtf:

i would much rather control it with a healthy lifestyle but not sure where to start ...
because i usually prefer fresh veggies and fruit and avoid red meat anyway.

My cholestrol was over 10 about a year ago. Cholestrol and heart problems is a family concern. My father died of a heart attack when he was 43, my elder brother died of his heart when he was 32 and my younger brother had a tripple by-pass surgery when he was 31 and also eventually passed away. I am now 47, so I am the oldest surviving male member of our family. When I found out my cholestrol was so high, I just excercised more. I did not change my diet at all, but, I took up cycling a while back, but gave it a bit more attention from then on. This year at the Argus cycle race expo I had my cholestrol checked again and my cholestrol was below 5. It is still on the high side, but within the acceptable limits. So, my advice is just to excercise more!
